Don't be one of those guys. 29 goals is the same (frank)ing thing.
Since 2011 he has scored or have been on pace for not less then 27 goals. |

He is a really great player.
Gets lost in the shuffle due to the other offensive weapons the leafs have. Really says how good their forwards are. - david22
Imagine how good they’ll be when they add Mark Stone. |

So Nylander becomes a centre, and we trade Marner?
But I agree. |

Lee Versage (I think that's his name) on the radio proposed my favourite move for Ottawa. He's convinced they need to "pull what Tampa did" last year so that they can be the best team in the NHL next season because this one is a write off.
1. Play all of their top young guys and in big roles. Chabot 20+ minutes. White in the top-6. Harpur in the top-4! Get Englund, Gagne, Jaros and Chlapik up too!
2. Trade your old slow guys for good young players!
3. Comeback in 2018 as the best team in the league.
4. Forget that Tampa's issues were injuries to practically every player on their roster at one point in the season including missing their franchise centreman for 90% of it!
5. Be a moron! - AdamFrench

I'll put it this way.
In the last 5 years JVR is 20th in goals.
14th amongst wingers
6th amongst LW
So technically....only 5 LWs can replace his goal scoring based on a resume. |

I wonder what the Leafs would need to give up to add JVR as a rental, possibly even re-signing him after. |

I, as Maple Leafs general manager, am hesitant to let him go for nothing, but we're at a point where we can have a win now mentality without necessarily risking the future.
In 20 years when Matthews, Nylander and Marner are on the verge of retiring, we'll have to have a different mentality. |

And the said 2 players will surely have more GP than Stone. Therefore a great trade for Nottawa.

I was wrong in thinking that the Leafs would move him before the season or during. It seems the Leafs will use him as their own rental and trade his rights in the off-season or let him walk.
If he continues on his current projections I don't think he signs for less than 7 and I'm unsure if the Leafs are willing to commit that. |

This might sound a bit homerist or naive, but I legit think that he might be willing to take a 1 million hometown haircut with the way things are going right now. |

I think he gets similar to Oshie. 5.75 per for 7/8 years. I guess that's pretty good value. Not sure about the final few years though. |

I'd like to think so too but I doubt it. Especially since Nylander will probably ask for a bridge deal and Marner will most likely play out his ELC.
If the team can bring JVR, Marner and Nylander collectively for 15 - 18 Million/year I think it's a steal. (Total homerism in thought though!) |

One of the favourite refrains of Leafs Nation is that guys will be willing to sign here for less, because they can make it up in endorsement deals.
But off the top of my head, I can't really think of many current Leafs shilling for companies.
Matthews: Scotiabank
Marleau: I saw him in a commercial the other day - can't for the life of me remember what the product was.
Brown: Sportchek?
Any others? |
