You think a 29 year old Karlsson is going to get the same as a 22 year old McDavid? Not a chance. Not in Ottawa, not anywhere. - JaredCrozier
McJesus was an RFA
EK will be a UFA on his last big contract....so ya he will but you are right....it wont be with Ottawa.
EK will want the "best player on the team cap %",as the cap goes up....so does that.
12 million easily. |

If the sens are this bad this year, what are the odds they'll be a lot better next year?
Unless Dahlin Karlsson is their top pairing next year |

it'll be fun if you guys end up with the 10th pick this year.
it's going to be hard to turn this team into a playoff team for next year |

its much more than a rumor now....which is why that's a moot point...money will be there for karlsson...im not worried about that at all |

He's of course amazing. But he will be 28-29 and a 8 year deal at 9mil till 37ish.... ouch. He only has 1 goal this year. |

I could see a front-loaded deal like Crosby where he makes $10-12 for 3-4 years but the cap hit will be lower because salary at the tail end also comes down, well within the legal parameters of course! - JaredCrozier
Do you really think he'll get less money than Kopitar? Kopitar's cap hit was $10M, with a $14M salary in the early years and $7M in the final years.
While I agree that any contract Karlsson signs will be front-loaded, it will likely be for $16M in the first couple seasons and $8M at the end. |

If you get a Top pick this year, Karlsson is good as gone if they were smart, go short rebuild to stock up for 2-3 years done the line.
Assets from a EK trade, Top pick, Chabot, White, Brown. you can rebuild your future core with these 21 and under guys
The Jets could be the one team that lines up for a Karlsson trade that works for both |

unless you guys are sending the 2019 1st back to them, it's going to be hard to pull off a 2-3 year rebuild. |

You assume injury recovery is plaguing his play this year, give him a blank check, and expect to see at least 12 mill per year on it.
Wouldn't surprise me if you see an new Karlsson deal, new area deal, and new owner all at the same time. |

Not an Ottawa fan but like that he said he will not take a home town discount - Why should he. You never see an owner asked if they would provide any such gratuity for a player. Its an owner pressure tactic to get the fan base to covertly pressure the player to "take a home town discount", and if the player does not he is villanized amongst the fan base - business works both ways. Hope he gets what he deserves and the fans support him whether he stays or goes. |

I do actually. In no year can the salary be less than 50% of the max contract salary year. No single year can vary more than 35% from year to year.
So as long as the contract goes down annually in steps, and the last year of the contract doesn't drop below 50% of the first year of the contract, it is in compliance.
So Karlsson's contract will look something like this:
Year 1: $16M
Year 2: $14M
Year 3: $13M
Year 4: $12M
Year 5: $12M
Year 6: $11M
Year 7: $10M
Year 8: $8M
Total Salary = $96M
Total AAV = $12M

I think the Sens have to wait until the upcoming draft before making any kind of decision.
If we get a top 3 pick, or maybe even win the lottery, the whole landscape of this decision will change IMO. |

This... This and all of this.
As a Leafs fan I know Sens followers love to think of all of us as biased and Sens hating, however to be honest with you, for a player of his caliber, this may even be a little bit of a discount.
If the Sens are like the OP and have no stomach to go over 8 years, 64 million, they should move him for whatever the hell they can get now. And to be honest, they probably should given how this season has gone if they have no stomach to bring him back at more than what PK makes.
Karlsson is too good to take a multi-million dollar discount. On the open market he'll probably wind up hauling in upwards of 12 million a season. If the Sens aren't willing to pony up, they might as well see what's available for him. If there's a package that's too good to pass up they should take it now and not lose him for nothing.
8 x 10.5 seems exactly right. |

he will get more than 10 for sure. I think you have to offer him 7 years at the least to match the term with what other teams are offering.
theres almost no chance he remains a sen long term |

Karlsson says he was taken out of context and wants to stay in Ottawa. I have no reason to doubt him if i have learned anything about Swede's from hockey they are brutally honest
The Toronto media or Leafs Booster club are overtly Sens haters it and love stirring the pot here remember the home opener ,yes the news turned out correct but perhaps that also helped break down negotiations with Turris . now they are employing the same tatics with Karlsson - spazzbot

Bonuses can offset actual salary. Look at marleau.
2017-18 1.5 salary 7 bonus
2018-19 1.5 sal 4 bonus
2019-2020 1.25 sal 3 bonus
Aav 6.25.
Signing bonuses allow for player to be tradeable later on to teams needing to reach cap floor but pay minimal salary.

Absolutely, but signing bonuses will be deducted from the salary for that year. It is likely that there will be some bonuses in lieu of salary, especially for the 2020-21 season when a lockout is possible. However, in order to remain cap compliant, the bonus + salary will still add up to the expected total.
So here's a possibility based on the schedule that I listed above:
Year 1 (2019-20): $10M salary, $6M bonus ($16M total)
Year 2 (2020-21): $2M salary, $12M bonus ($14M total)
Year 3 (2021-22): $10M salary, $3M bonus ($13M total)
Year 4 (2022-23): $10M salary, $2M bonus ($12M total)
Year 5 (2023-24): $12M salary
Year 6 (2024-25): $11M salary
Year 7 (2025-26): $10M salary
Year 8 (2026-27): $8M salary
Total Contract: $96M
Total AAV: $12M |
