de Haan isn't taking $4.5M or $5M from a team that gave him a hard time in negotiations last offseason. He'll get $6M+ on the open market and I don't blame him for a second for taking that route.
- eichiefs9

i believe dehaan would have taken 5 mil deal but wanted a long term deal that isls didn't want to do with out knowing what they will have to pay JT, that said someone probably will offer him more money but he may want to stay for a little less if he gets his 6-8 yr deal.....

It was reported that he asked for $5M in arbitration and the Islanders were offering $1.95M. There was no report about the term on either his request or the team's offer.

You can bet that, with him being a UFA and the cap likely going up a reasonably-significant amount, he is going to be looking for quite a bit more than $5M. I think he gets over $6M on the open market, easily.

He's gonna be 27 in May and is a defenseman that provides almost zero offensive value. I'm not sold on giving him a max term deal. That said, like I mentioned before, I'm not exactly sold on a UFA defenseman either. This year's crop is less-than-stellar, which means middle-tier guys (like de Haan) are going to clean up.

edit: The only UFA defenseman I would love to see in an Isles jersey long-term would be John Carlson. I am sure the Capitals will make every effort to re-sign him and they don't have any other really "important" guys to sign. They're up pretty tight against the cap, but I would venture to guess that they find a way to fit him in.

What about Carolina? They need scoring and are loaded with young D.

I don't see them trading any of their young defenseman inside of the Metro. If I'm looking for defenseman via trade, I'm probably looking at Western Conference teams. Or Atlantic teams, at the very least.

poop, forgot about the division.

Trouba as mentioned before might work. It’s hard to tell with the Jets. After so many disappointing seasons they might not want to (frank) with the status quo now that they’re winning.

Chevy is a weird dude. Makes almost no trades. I assume he'll probably want to hang onto Trouba, with Enstrom likely departing. But I dunno. Seems plausible. Hellebuyck is the only other guy that they need to re-sign this offseason and they aren't exactly cap-strapped. So I doubt we have a shot at getting Trouba, but I guess you never know. They could use a middle-six center, but their offense is already pretty damn potent.

Top 5 in the league for sure. No real holes on that squad TBH, so long as the Hellebuyck we've seen this year is the real thing and not an aberration.

before you start getting too excited bout Toew and Aho on islanders its worth noting that Soundtigers are 12-10 this season. I would exactly be saying our guy are dominating down there.

Is Clayton Keller not having a good year because the coyotes stink? We watch them play they are ready especially toews

One thing I didn't catch earlier was that Ehlers' $6M extension kicks in next season. They have to pay Laine after next season, and you know that after seeing Draisaitl get that monster extension...he won't be cheap. Maybe Trouba does become a cap casualty, who knows.

I would expect that they absolutely have to address the defense in the offseason. de Haan is probably gone and they can't have Leddy/Boychuk and then a bunch of rookies/young guys that aren't that good.
- eichiefs9

There are no absolutes in the off-season with Garth Snow. How many times did you and the rest of the world say he absolutely had to address something and he didn't?

Will be interesting to see if Belmont gets approved and the Isles do not go on long playoff run, do the owners fire Garth?

Isles have to make the playoffs in order to go on a long playoff run. We're not there yet not by a long shot but with that said if there is a God Snow will be fired

I don't like Snow at all, just want to be very clear about that...but the grass isn't always greener. We could hire the next Yzerman or we could end up with the next Chiarelli

All true Cpt but they better make the playoffs this year and especially with the schedule going the Isles way for the most part in the 2nd half.

I hadn't considered that either. And with the Jets having fair dept with D prospects, it certainly wouldn't hurt to inquire.

If Trouba really wants to play in the states and you tell him he can be Lee's teammate. The deal is as good as done.
