Wonder if Maple Leafs made a deal with the bank to give Matthews this deal so he'll accept less from the Leafs in order to make it salary friendly.

Tavares costs nothing but money.

So if you add him, you can then trade a forward for a defenceman.

Because let's be honest - if (big if) Tavares becomes available, there isn't a comparable UFA defenceman on the market in summer 2018.

And the odds are slim there will be a comparable one in summer 2019, either (maybe OEL).

If they let Bozak, Komarov and JVR walk, there is room for Tavares.. IF, he does become available.

Good news for the leafs.

NHL shared next season salary cap projection with Governors today: between $78 M and $82 M depending on negotiated inflator with NHLPA in June... so either way, up from current $75 M

- justmike

the way the canadian $ is, those estimates see high. just my opinion.

~11% escrow for the players right now. i could see them not wanting to go all in with the inflator.

You mean the same bank that pays $40M/year to have its name on the building that the Leafs play in?

I doubt it.

Ridiculous what-if scenario but... would the league have any kind of recourse if a star player got a "totally" "unrelated" "sponsorship" deal for a huge amount of money then signed for like $1mil per?

Don't think the Leafs would make it that obvious..

Like free transactions? Or no monthly fee?

Could work. Unless he hears about Tangerine or PC, then we're (frank)ed.

If you read the CBA, the section on cap circumvention basically says that if it doesn't pass the sniff test, the league can say no.

If you factor in the Hartford Whalers, the Hurricanes are part of the Original 21.

Elite company. Only 75% of townships in North America with a population over 100k were allowed to participate.

And you had to be a billionaire.

Or at least you had to tell the NHL Executive Committee that you were a billionaire.

Unless the committee purposely avoided asking you if you actually had enough money to operate a franchise.

But sometimes you had to have a bit of knowledge about hockey.

But not often.

And you had to have a solid business plan that outlined how you would grow the love of hockey in a non-traditional market - unless you didn't have a plan.

I disagree.

From what I see in each situation. There is a very good possibility one or two of Karlsonn, Doughty, Mcdonagh, OEL reaches the open market.

Mcdonagh is the least likely imo and even then I wouldn't be surprised at all

I'm probably in the minority here, but whoever goes after Doughty and Karlsson are going to regret it.
Doughty will get 7 years at the age of 30. For at least 10 mil a year. He also has a lot of miles on him with the Kings.

I personally think Drew is extremely overrated and doesn't take over a game like Karlsson, Burns, Hedman, Subban and Hainsey can.

He gets about 40-45 points per year and is solid but not spectacular.

Also, if the opposition has Tkachuk, Drew has no interest in the hockey game and is rendered completely useless.

Frustrating one, Andersen was good, can't continue to let teams pull that dirty stuff around the crease. Polak is not the answer, need a big D there to react appropriately when Andersen gets run over.

Yeah okay, then the Leafs get a penalty.
