They could if they didn't sign Lucic/Russell. I'm assuming they'd trade one of Eberle/RNH for a dman(RNH has similar value to Henrique if not higher, so a Vatanen type of dman) and they'd still be able to sign a decent UFA dman during one of the last couple of summers.


Something like:

Maroon - McJesus - Draisaitl
Hall - Barzal - Eberle

Trade for a Vatanen type of dman(or maybe even better) using RNH and sign a dman like Del Zotton/Demers to go along with Sekera/Klefbom and you're likely looking like a contender this year if your bottom 6 forward group isn't a tire fire.

I never got that vibe form his interviews after that trade. Seemed like we was pissed that he played on poop teams for years and now the team had a chance to make the playoffs with McJesus and he gets traded. And they traded him to a team that was a mess at the time as well.

I think McJesus will mature into one. He stills get too emotional, but I think he'll be fine captain in the long run.
