why would any team want Karlsson? he is overpaid for what he does. any other team he might not put up the numbers he does now. a 2nd line offensive defenseman
that is all he is

- BluesDroogie

Karlsson is the best defenseman in the NHL.

Pouliot doing what we all expected he would do given a real opportunity with the Pens. It's unfortunate. They probably could have moved Dumo for JVR or Kane, or just not signed Huntwick and had an extra $1.5M to spend on a forward.

If I'm GMJR I am on the phone every single day with Chiarelli, Botterill and Bergevin. One of Maata, Dumo, Schultz or Letang can be moved. Those are all GM's who need D badly and are most likely to be swindled.

Letang & Hagelin for Weber & Galchenyuk?
Letang for Oreilly with $1.5M retained?
Letang, Sheehan & Simon for RNH, Russell & Puljujarvi?

- MacPatty

No to every single one of these.

Yeah, Weber is signed for the next 100 years. No thanks. Russell is not good. Puljujujuarvi is meh. I'd be interested in Nuge or O'Reilly but the cost for both is going to be something that cripples the Pens as a team. Well O'Reilly at least, maybe not Nuge, Chia does suck at trades.

Team just needs 2 more players: a third line center and a top 9 wing. One needs to spark offense and one needs to be a 2 way guy who also kills penalties.

Between Sprong, Simon, and ZAR, we hopefully will fill the wing internally by season's end. Bumping Hags and Sheahan down to the 4th line would at least make it a group you can play against scoring lines and eat some defensive zone starts.

Right now the only teams that look like sellers (looking at their records) are Arizona and Buffalo. I think it's a really big possibility they make a deal with Buffalo and Botteril. Someone over on HFBoards posted this, and I actually think this is pretty fair value...

Evander Kane(25% retained)

for

Kasper Bjorkvist(2016 2nd round pick)
2018 PIT 1st
2019 PIT 3rd(becomes 2019 PIT 2nd if Kane resigns with PIT)
Carl Hagelin

I don't know if I see a center really worth targeting aside from RNH. I could see the Pens looking at Anthony Duclair (as well as a lot of other teams).

Yea definitely I'm hoping one of those wings comes up and pulls a Guentzel/Sheary. And we do need that third line center. I like Sheahan for the 4th line like most people around here do to.

Not that I wouldn't take that deal in a heartbeat, but teams will probably offer deals like that without having to take a Carl Hagelin back.

Yea that's not bad we just really need that center. Unless we get Kane and Sprong comes up and we really load up the wingers to help the bottom 6 scoring. And I agree at the moment it's RNH or forget about it we already added that Sheahan type we don't need another.

Just thought about this too though if we get Kane and Sprong or one of the wingers come up we can move Guentzel to center if we can't get a good one.

Russell is not a good player but if the Pens can get Nuge & Puljujarvi in return it would be worth taking on the contract. The cap might go up by 5M this year. Having a guy like RNH locked in long term at $6M to play 3C could easily work. Puljujarvi would be a great long term fit on Malkin's wing.

Again, not saying it is a perfect deal. But this would serve as a long term boost to the offensive depth of the team.

What I want is what won't happen, but I think is a more realistic scenario for the Pens.

Move Guentzel to 3C. Maybe I had blinders on, but I don't get why they didn't keep him at 2C when Geno was out; I thought he looked comfortable and good there. My only thought is that maybe they wanted to get Sheahan some 2nd line minutes to see how it goes.

But anyway...

1) Move Guentzel to 3C.
2) Make an aggressive play for E. Kane ONLY if he'll re-sign, or some upgrade in the top six.
3) Pick up this year's Daley.

The Pens need a Daley-type dman on the 3rd pair to help drive offense. In my fantasy world, that would mean moving Hunwick in another deal to clear up space. Maybe he'd go in the Kane deal.

Johnson in COL is a UFA after this year. He's obviously a mixed bag with his play in both ends, but the guy can generate offense. Him on the 3rd pair would probably bring more success for him than playing the first pair in COL.

Plus a Cole/Johnson combo would be physically imposing while generating offense.

This is all in my unrealistic world, but I think it's a more realistic play than seeking out that elusive 3C upgrade.

I'd slightly tweak that deal as Hagelin could be really useful for the Pens in a playoff run. I don't think Buffalo would bat an eye at retaining half of Kane's salary and they would prefer to guarantee that draft pick. The Pens are so bad at drafting and developing anymore I'd have no problem trading away the picks.

Johnson is signed for 4 more years at $6M per year. He is also one of the leaders on that team, no way the Avs or Pens would make a trade on him. Only way the Avs would trade him is if Toronto offers them some of their prime time prospects.

IMO, FLA, PHI, and EDM should be in that boat even though they provably aren't yet. Wild cars is still Vegas who can make the playoffs staying pat but then lose many of their best players and be royally screwed.

I really haven't seen who's available though. You could be right that pickings at center are too thin as we ate hardly the only team needing one and don't have many bullets to trade without subtracting from the roster.
