would you use that pick if it were to be higher at the deadline this year to try and get defensive help? this team is hard to pinpoint I mean we know they can score but in playoffs its tighter and harder so will they be able to play ?
- Upstate_isles

I honestly think I would rather have an upgrade at goalie if I had to choose between the two. Problem is I don't see any realistic options out there worth trading a 1st for.

Do you think the poor defensive play is as much a product of the players or the system itself? I say this knowing that every one on our defense has made some gaffes but that's expected with any team to some extent...
- Cptmjl

I think its more the goalies then the defense at this point. Is the D great? No but I don't think they have been brutal either the goalies on the other hand

Very fair. Think the goalies play this year has been surprisingly bad. D had more question marks.

Goalies have a lot to do with it I agree but I still think one of them straightens it out. Either Halak goes on a streak which we all know he's capable of or Greiss gets his poop together.

So is the Duchene Non trade.

Would have been so bad giving up Barzal for Duchene.

Would have to be a really good top 4 dman if the Flames pick is a lottery pick.
- ses111

We will have two picks in the first round. I'd think Snow would take a top notch forward first then a dman with the second pick in the first round providing Snow keeps both picks.

Yep and with all of that we're a point away from the division lead and 3 points out of the conference lead. Imagine if we straightened out our defense

Isles do seem much more set on D in the system with Toews and Aho knocking on the door. I think a forward is mostly likely taken first.

I say roll with what you have maybe give Aho and Toews a look...keep the picks because this is one of the best drafts supposedly in a long time...and we have two picks and one might be a lottery pick...

Another good center like Barzal would be nice...then you have JT (when he signs), Barzal, the pick and Cizikas...

I think a top 4 could really help depending on who was picked up. Isles still need to work on the entire team D concept and the goalies of course have to play better. Isles are in a very good position trade wise with the two #1's and some d prospects to move along with a player like Nelson. Garth cannot say he has nothing to trade. This should be the year for Garth to be a little aggressive with the Isles looking good in the standings.

well hard to say i mean a shut down d would be great but oel aside there arent any out there. as for the goalie greiss was playing well till ottawa so maybe its just a one game egg and halak has looked better as well they have let in soft goals but also faced a lot of quality chances too

Scary. I thought it was such an easy decision not to include Barzal in a deal for a guy like Duchene that could walk in two years. I also did not like how Duchene played last year even with all the issues with the Avs.

Isles such do well whether they decide to trade one pick or not. Garth has all the resources and the excuses are really over.

They both seem to be good for two soft goals a game the entire season save for one or two games each. Tough way to win games even if we've done it so far I don't believe it's sustainable .

the team is scoring at an unreal pace and as many as they let in they are a +13 which is top 10 in goal differential. this is the year to go in the window is wide open

I said Duchene wasn't as good as thus thread was making him out to be. What was that proposal again?

Pelech, Mayfield, Seidenberg, and Hickey (in no particular order) are all pretty terrible. Pulock is young.

That's 5 out of 8 defenseman that are varying degrees of unreliable.

They need to find a way to add a defenseman that can help steady things on the back-end. Whether that's Ekman-Larsson, Hjalmarsson, or someone else...I don't know. But something has to give back there. They aren't going to move assets for another goaltender, so the blueline is where they need to improve most.

Also, de Haan will be gone next year. So they're going to need another competent-at-worst veteran presence back there on the left side.
