I wouldn't mind seeing some of these guys get the Iron Mike treatment. - Scoob
Exactly. If nothing else, I think you'd see more accountability across the board. I'm not saying he's going to turn them into a contender overnight, or that he'd the the long-term solution, but he may be able to bring them back to respectability. |

Then they will say it's a positive step from a tough trip, balances off some the winnable games they let slip away and they are a good homestand away from getting the ship righted before the Christmas break. - bmeltzer
And Ed Grimley brings his triangle because someone might ask him to play. |

I wouldn't personally but I could see the flyers inquiring. I think if you're looking outside the organization Sutter makes the most sense but I'm not sure we wouldn't be better off with an off season coaching search. Look at some the better nhl assistants etc. |

Tippett might be a more boring coach than Hakstol. You'd have Nolan Patrick on a breakaway dumping the puck into the corner to make sure he's in good defensive position. |

If you literally just drove dumptruck full of money and dumped it all on Scotty Bowman's driveway, do you think he'd come out of retirement? |

It's funny cos it's true.
I wouldn't hate Tippett being the hire but don't know that he's the guy for the kids. |

I know Mike just a bit (we correspond every once in a blue moon) and we all know his rep. I also got to know a few of the people involved in Kunlun management and hockey ops because they were also the ones who organized the Flyers Alumni trip to Russia earlier this year.
There's a collection of strong personalities there -- all are good hockey people with strong track records, all are really nice guys away from the rink but also all are strong-willed and very opinionated. So I am not a bit surprised that Keenan's tenure as coach was short-lived when the team hit a real rough patch.
As for Keenan coming back to Philly, I personally don't see a match at all between him and this current team or any sort of philosophical alignment between him and Hexy. With all that said, I'd defer deeper knowledge of the subject to Jay Greenberg, because Jay and Keenan are still very close and Jay also knows Hexy better personally and for much longer than myself.

His system has actually proven itself to have some NHL success which is far and away more than you can say about Hak. Did a great job with early Coyotes teams and navigated some difficult waters the last few years amicably, had a trash roster. |

To some degree yes, but when you don't have the skill you would like, put the guys who give you effort on the ice. That means you don't sit Leier for 3 games while vets like Weise and Lehtera give you nothing. It also means you take one of the guys off of your top line to try and get another line going. I just don't see a top quality NHL head coach when I watch Hakstol. I look at teams with comparable or perhaps even lesser talent than the Flyers like New Jersey, Carolina, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and Colorado all out performing the Flyers, some by quite a big margin. This has to mean something.
Yes, it's certainly not all on the head coach, but some of it certainly is. I've had my fill. - BiggE
They have more players with heart, drive, and more determination possibly. Maybe they don't have lesser talent and flyers players/prospects are overrated.
This core has been around for a while and done squat. It isn't all on them though no matter who the coach is these you wont win with these guys imo.
coach def shoulders some blame has does Saint Ronnie. |

Good points. I can't speak to his treatment of youth, but I do like his overall puck-possession philosophy (if your D are out of the D zone 80% of the time because they can skate/pass, their play in the D zone doesn't matter much). |

No. His time is past and his style would never work with today's NHL players.

Something I am having a tough time digging up info on...are teams able to hire an assistant from another team in-season? I can't remember and instance and I am having trouble finding an example...but I am not sure if it doesn't happen because it isn't allowed or it doesn't happen because teams don't let it. |

I'm on the Fire Hakstol band wagon, I've seen enough in the last year to base my opinion on that...but after listening to what Hextall said after loss # 9....I don't think even 3 losses out west regardless of how brutal they are gets him canned....he talked about how young this team is and how a lot of the losses could be attributed to inexperience. That's not about to change. The only thing I could see happening is that some of the young guys really regress....that's what Hextall has stated is one of his coaches best attributes... But I think short of another 5 or 6 losses where the GM is forced to do something with the lineup, Hak is probably safer then we all hope. |

I don't think an NHL team would allow it in-season as long as that assistant is under contract. There may also be compensation required (not sure). So unless a team is ready to cut ties with the assistant, in which case there should be some red flags, I don't think it's possible. |

After tonight Hakstol will be replaced by Mike Keenan. It will come full circle, the guy who rode Hextall in 86-87 will now coach for him in 2017-18.
"It's the night you love to hate." Oops that's on Wednesday's.
My prediction, a team will win tonight. |
