come on...

hes an above average 2nd line center, probably

- robz228

He’d be a fine 2nd line center on a team like Tampa, or Winnipeg

Duchene had 41 pts and was a -34 for the tire fire Avs last year. You'd probably have to take salary back but they wouldn't have trouble getting good value in the deal.
- Sabresfan-365

That's a good point, but ror's cap number is much higher than Duchesnes.

that's only one part of it though. That same chart at one point said marincin was 10x the player Ristolainen is.
- Sabresfan-365

fair enough, the charts do not account for how a player is used

and that makes oreilly's chart slightly more impressive, hes used almost entirely defensively

shooting percentage + save percentage

usually averages to 100%

- robz228

100% is usually excellent - why does this say 100% is average?

What is the crazy talk?

No, he’s not exclusively used defensively

He has more offensive zone starts than Niklas Backstrom and Auston Matthews

The Oilers were lost until they lucked out on McDavid. He was their 4th 1st overall pick in like the 7th year of their rebuild.

Unless you want to tell me that in 3 years we’re drafting someone better than Eichel, I don’t want to use the Oilers as some gold standard

- sbroads24

They're also not that far off of what the reality is. Look at the Panthers, Canes, Yotes, Flames, Jets... They're all still spinning their wheels. And then you have your Caps, Wild, Blues and until last year Preds. Very good teams that couldn't get out of their own way.

The Leafs might be the exception that proves the rule, but they haven't done anything yet either.

sorry...though you said the sabres and oilers had nothing in common then proceeded to mention in another post that the sabers have finished bottom-10 five consecutive years

its even simpler than that, id look at how many of the PP goals against/empty netters against he was on for.

His goalies being at 84% requires an extra look at where the shots are coming from. If there's an increase in High danger scoring chances when he's on that would mean hes not doing his job well. If it's lower relative to his teammates then the goalie has his head up his ass.

Jack needs a definitive wing man to help him be a star.

Team needs a scoring second line to take pressure away from jacks line .

Need defense that can have an idea that it is ok to shoot on a open spot of the net

Seriously.

New Jersey just picked 1st. Made moves, got a ton better

Winnipeg just drafted 2nd two years ago, made moves, are maybe the best team in the NHL.

We’re in 31st, after 5 straight previous years of bottom 10 finishes “Were trying to skip making the playoffs”

What?

- sbroads24

They have winning the lottery in common.

Doing something is fine for the sake of development, but not for the sake of winning meaningless games. We won meaningless games in 2016 and now we have Nylander when we might have had Matthews. I swear, we go through this board the same discussion with the Sabres and the Bills every year.
- sskkoo1

The nylander pick is gonna sting I'm afraid.
Some serious talent in that draft

It comes down to how you define a zone start. Since most of the starts are in the neutral zone people just throw them out for some reason. Like a faceoff 5 feet outside your zone isn't a defensive draw.

I wouldn’t trash him for his +/-.

I’d trash him for being completely invisible 90% of the time

- sbroads24

I've trashed him for both, and I really like him.
I've even defended him with maybe an injury?

We're 31st and gave up alot for him.
And we pay him a lot of money

true...the oilers tried doing a rebuild completely through youth from the draft, murray attempted to augment his young draft picks with young vets

yea, hockey reference is strictly zone starts, not half starts

regardless, broadcasts always even point out how hes out there for a ton of d-zone draws. so by the eye test hes used defensively too.

I'd be curious to see total draws/60 I'd bet ROR's are way higher, Sabres games have zero flow with constant starting a stopping. That's why percentages are better.
