Sorry folks but Harrington hits it on the head here.... THE SABRES ARE A PATHETIC BUNCH THAT CAN'T COMPETE ON A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. For those who are going to give me the business here one question... Show me proof that this team has improved one iota in the last 6 years......

July 1, 2007 still haunts this team to this day. From ownership on down. The Sabres have never recovered from that day. New owners, new GM, new coaches... Does not matter. That day still hangs over this team like a perennial dark cloud....

I read the article yesterday, agree with much of it.

Saturday I wrote on this forum that Housley needs to sit some guys in the press box who are under performing to give them a view of the game, to see it from a different perspective.
From Harrington “Similarly, Housley should do something too. Put somebody in the press box you wouldn't expect for Saturday's rematch with the Penguins.”

I’d rotate all the Entire team through it, save no one. Have a coach sit with each to point out the good, the bad and the ugly in real time.

Further, those refusing to buy in to playing his system, get several games to reinforce the learnings over a longer period of time to drive those points home.

They could call it a Mentally Unhealthy Scratch game...not some upper body injury bs.

This mess all starts with Pegula. He hired rookie GM's and Housley. Murray set this team back five years. The only top level NHL players the Sabres have are Eichel and Kane. That's it. After all the tanking, all the drafting, all the trades, that's it.

ROR is a nice player, but not a 7.5M player, #55 is regressing badly. It is shocking to look at the number of players who are making 4M-5M-6M a year on the Sabres who wouldn't be dressing for other teams if they were making the minimum. Okposo, Moulson and Gorges earn $15M a year and they are finished.
Kane should be resigned but why the heck would he? The rookie GM awarded Eichel $10M a year when he had no reason to. Eichel has no arbitration rights. Now he is being paid like a superstar yet he has never played like a superstar.

Look at the Leafs. They are being run by three HHoF'ers. Shanahan, Lou and Babcock. Do you think Jack would be getting away with his crap in Toronto? Nope. In Buffalo, it's 21 year old Jack in charge. Breaking sticks, pouting, blaming others and getting coaches fired. It's no wonder they are losing

This..and. unfortunately, with guaranteed contracts..a player does not have fulfill the expectations of the signed contract. Players don't have to produce a single point and still collect their money with virtually no recourse. You can't always blame teams for this. Teams sign players in good faith of expected production. Players have to be held responsible for non-performance.

Great read. Couple points:

Crosby played and acted similarly to Eichel early in his career. Yes, obviously he was more productive and is more talented but they went through similar growing pains that come with being drafted and labeled a franchise player right out of the gate for failing programs, they were both surrounded by under-performing team mates, and they both cried about it a bit too much. Crosby grew out of it and became the best player in the league. Pens became a dynasty.
Does Eichel have this in him? Can he turn the page, shut up and put his money where his mouth is too? I'm not 100% sure but we will obviously give him the chance since he is locked in for 10 years.

Second point:
If we want to muster and successes with this team we have to prioritize play for guys like Antipin. Why would Gorges ever get playing time over Antipin? Just one example. I'm not sold on Housley so far. I'm a bit surprised and some of the poor decision making unless there is a bigger picture agenda I'm missing here?

No he did not. He just didn't. He lived with Mario during his first two years. Sidney did and still does have a bit of a reputation as a whiner on the ice, but that's it. He's always been dedicated to the team first.

Eichel may grow up and start acting like a man. Or he may continue to be a coach killer. For the sake of the Sabres franchise, I hope he does grow up

My guess is that Botterill wants the youth to grow in Rochester and to not be subjected to the atrocities that are happening with the big club.

My biggest thing right now is that the team is not holding each other accountable.

Nolan and Scandella have definitely been the forefront of this theory by their repeated comments. To me, the team needs to identify the captain and stop playing the 4 As card. It's not working. The team needs someone to take the reigns. I don't care who it is at this point.

And we should probably move him now while anyone thinks he's "top level".

I hope he does as well or he will be dubbed a cancer on the franchise and we will end up eating part of his salary just to get rid of him.

On the Crosby note, Mario had to come out of retirement to play on a line with Crosby if you recall. It was in response to the teams criticism and inability for anyone to get things going with Crosby. Crosby did do his fair share of complaining, nothing like the poop we are witnessing with Eichel , but he did.

How is any of this Eichel or Housley's fault?

I also hate the blame Pegula stuff too. Pegula was never going to come in and fire Regier right off the bat. Tim Murray was a highly though-of scout who spent like a drunken sailor. So instead of blaming the GMs who made the mess, you blame the owner who gives them every opportunity to succeed. Hell, you could blame Galisano for not firing Regier after Drury and Brier left. That's who far back these problems started, so blaming Jack or Housley for the current state of the team is absurd.

We're all pissed off about it - well i'm actually more numb than anything else - but at this point, it's all about acquiring more talent. Turning on the best player in the organization is silly and pointless

I agree with these statements.

Pegula doesn't care about the money. Win or Lose, the money doesn't matter to him. He bought the teams to keep them in the city. Should he be more involved, or less involved? I don't know.

Was Housley the wrong choice? It's too early to tell in my opinion. The talent level of the team is no where near what you would likely need to run the system that Housley wants. Botterill and Housley likely have a plan and it sucks that it's going to take another lost year before we can go somewhere (hopefully).

If everyone wants Eichel to stop whining, and losing it in the locker room, make him the captain and hold him accountable. Or make someone the captain and tell him to stop acting like a child.

The leadership by committee thing is not working.
