I think Jim Bennngs greatest failure a second a GM has been that he has spent to the cap every season for teams that have been pretty terrible. He could have achieved the same results and saved the owner 20 million dollars at least.
- 1970vintage

That's probably a failure based on what's important to you. Although saving FA money is a strange priority to a fan.

It's only a failure if the owner instructed him to save him 20m. If they Owner said use the full cap and he came in 20m under, that would be failure.

We are not a 90's pre lock out team in the south or anything. We have an owner who wants to spend to the cap every season obviously or JB would have been fired.

No kidding. I've noticed this group repeating topics and subject matter. The most significant discussion point over the last year has been people's behaviour on here.

As entertaining as it's been it just doesn't fill that void.

Knowing the canucks it will be veteran leadership to replace the loss of the twins

I spoke my piece on him and then squashed it after whitey chimed in. I like your optimism though, this place hasnt been the same for the last 2 years.

My take is quite simple.

If we forget the old regimes & trades etc & live more in the moment it would be better in here. I truly don’t know why we revisit the past so often when it rarely applies to the present. Rather we stick to this years team & prospects & focus on JB & TL for their contributions. Good or bad it needs to be tempered greatly with the future in mind.

Our cap space is looking good.
Our prospects pool better than ever.
Some questionable UFA signings but not the end of the world or cap stangling us.
In the end this TDL & offseason & draft will be a defining time for this management team.

Forgot Lind but see him as a Swiss Army knife type of player who can play up & down the line up with an edge.

Can see Sven getting paid 6 3.5-4m.
Granlund off year gets him cheap.
EG if still here 4-4.5m max i hope.
JV modest bridge raise to 1.5m.
Pouliot maybe 2m
Stecher bridge 1.8m

All guesses but leaves a lot of cap space.

For some reason I feel like it's Makita paying Stetcher so I don't think he gets anything going forward.

But the ramifications of his decisions will continue to challenge the team for years to come. 6 year unreadable contracts last 6 years. I don’t give two poops about saving the owners money, but the spending appears to have been for the sake of it, as the product hasn’t delivered. It isn’t like a government department that will lose its budget if it doesn’t spend the whole thing.

It’s just my opinion, neither of us is “right”...

Just a heads up, but we’re approaching new blog time...

I'm juggling two browsers... one on the home page refreshing every 3 min and the thread page... if I turn over the puck this time, I deserve to be benched.

I agree & he is an intriguing prospect.
Another winger but still an asset.
We are getting deep on wingers & might open up trades for needs or high picks.

Poker game & JB has chips 👍👍

Lol true

Stecher is a curiosity but so far he has not shown any real offensive upside. I agree with Mak & if traded i’m cool.

We can survive the LE contract no problem. Many other teams face much worse cap situations whilst not being contenders. We are in a very good cap position & many don’t quite see that. Too often they go to the over used well that JB will do something foolish. So far in reality that is not the case.

You know how many transitions I've seen on this board in 13 years? Personally, I've adjusted to every one of them and lived with it. The transition from 2005 to now is insane. It's like playing Civilisation. I showed up here wearing a fury loin cloth armed with a club. We're not even close to the space age yet. In fact, you guys are still only dropping bombs from Zeppelins.

Hell it was even more fun watching Chompsey and Booner go at each others throats every day for a year.

I replied to "spending to the cap" when this team doesn't have a 90's style internal cap like say Brian Burke had under the Griffiths.

Poor use of cap space seems like what you are now saying. In some areas I agree... can't find a team that gets all their contracts right though. I try to level the playing field when I look at this.

Statement from Dorsett sounds like the Dr is saying his playing days are done, and he is thankful for the time he spent in the NHL. Feel awful for the guy.

I guess nuck4u really feels awful now that we lost a "pump and dump trade chip".

Really sad day for a heart and soul type of guy.

Good on him for putting his hockey mentality aside and expressing discomfort. He did the right thing.

While his career may be over, He's got a long life to live.

Cheers DD.

I don't see him on this team next season to be honest. As usual, we are all sky high optimistic when it comes to a D rookie but moving forward their is little progress. College kids always look better than junior kids when it comes to D at the same rookie age bracket. We mistake the upside college kids have right away because of this. More likely we get Huttons and Stechers rather than Tanevs. If the are free agents, you celebrate more. Which creates more disappointment. That's what's happened to me over the years at least.

Never every day... in fact Chompsey was always just an occasional poster on here opposed to a daily one.

We put that aside about 3 or 4 years ago but it was never every day. Historically, there was always a break between the blow outs that went weeks if not months. Same with Bloated and I... a day or two and we would sense that we were really making everyone else miserable. I understand how one doesnt consider it though... I'm guilty of it but seriously, it gets shelved for later... and that has always been acceptable. Nobody demands friendship on here... I refuse to promise to not have my blow outs... you are missing the point.

Spending to the cap for LTIR benefits is ok.
With good RFA’s signing longterm & the UFA market drying up the last few years its a hard thing to say us spending to the cap matters much. Only reasoni can see not to is taking on LTIR contracts if any r available & we get back a good asset. Toxic contracts are another story & we get a great deal or walk away & let the other live with the problem.

It was far more often than you think, and for some reason it's never your fault.

Oddly enough, the whole damn thread is tired of one poster and we should let it be.....
