After the way Smith played when he was brought over, no question about extending him. The problem is that instead of proving he deserved the contract, he came to camp out of shape and deserved to watch from the pressbox.
How bad was the D early on? Now that he has been inserted into the lineup, he has yet to find chemistry. I think he will regain form if allowed to stay in. - Fenrir
I think fans are delusional... Smith wasn’t that great in playoffs. Skjei carried him. Guarentee if we had waited to see if we could sign Shatty, we pass on Smith. Problem was Gorton wasn’t taking a chance on not getting either.
Aries Spears blocked me on twitter I went to his website and clicked on tour dates and it said nothing booked at this time. So I took a screen shot of it and posted it on his twitter account with the caption "Stay Hot" blocked a minute later

He did a mean Cosby impression. The first black guy on Mad TV in the mid 90s did it good too, the guy who was in a ton of flicks round that time but dropped off the earth since. Orlando Jones I think was his name.

Not sure Stepan Trade was to get Shatty. Priority was to rebuild defense and get younger. People don’t seem to realize that DeAngelo was a guy they wanted. He is an offensively gifted kid who eventually will be a regular. I really don’t think Gorton thought he’d get Shatty on deal he did. If so, there was no reason to sign Smith. That is, as I said when it happened, the contract that Gorton will regret. - junaka3
The Stepan trade was made in key to get his annual $6.5M cap hit through 2020/21, and NTC beginning shortly as well, off their hands in order to sign their #1 NEED going into this season in a 1st pairing, right handed shooting d'man to be McDonagh's partner and lead the offense out of the zone, as well as manning the power play. In turn, that would leave McDonagh the benefit of concentrating predominantly on his defensive game. That top offensive proven NHL d'man was Shatty, and not a 39 NHL games only played, Deangelo. They were trying to acquire Shatty last season, prior to the Caps doing so at the trade deadline. In knowing they could not meet the Blues asking price, they acquired Smith instead on Feb. 28th to replace the often injured last season, Kevin Klein.
Furthermore, why would they want to deal a top center of their's in Stepan on June 24th, 2017, after having just officially lost Lindberg in the Expansion Draft on June 21st, after submitting their protected list required on June 17th??? IT WAS NOT TO TRADE FOR DEANGELO, but in key, for a 1st Round pick, which of their two, used that one to select a current 19 year old kid from Sweden named Lias Andersson, who Gorton and company through their overseas scouts, felt would be able to replace the loss of Stepan while Hank is still here. That, plus Arizona's demand to have Raanta included in the trade for them to pick up Stepan's full contract and cap hit, right now is the reason why this team will struggle just to make it to the postseason, since Gorton failed to otherwise be creative trade wise to increase his cap space through the move of at least one other player's contract for prospect(s) &/or pick(s) only.
