To what is this discussion even relevant? Saying the Devils did better than the Rangers? Saying that the Rangers should have traded Stepan in a Vatanen deal? - Pete V
again, he's just taking the opposite side of an argument that I am making just to do it |

Comparing the returns of both teams. I know that without trading Stepan, Shattenkirk signs elsewhere. |

No they wouldn't have. I just think that the while both the Devils and Rangers overpaid a bit, the Devils got something tangible back in their deal with Vatanen. - tomburton99
But thats is if you leave out Shattenkirk. Technically it wasn't a trade but it was a direct result of that trade. I would take Shattenkirk 10 out of 10 times over Vatanen.
So we did get something very tangible out of the Stepan trade |

let me dumb it down for you
Stepan's cap hit: 6.5 million a year.
Shattenkirk's cap hit: 6.5 million a year.
it's not too difficult |

The 7th overall pick is very tangible, whether people like to admit it or not. Guys drafted in the top 10 are players that organizations hope to play for their club for years, and they come cheap early and the club has long term control over them.
I think we need to reassess the definition of the word tangible.

if Stepan was still a Ranger this season and was stuck on 3 goals like he is in Arizona I'd be working overtime defending the guy right about now |

I think a better comparison for the Stepan deal is the McDonagh deal.
Gomez got you McDonagh and the ability to sign Gaborik
Stepan got you DeAngelo, Anderson, and the ability to sign Shattenkirk. |

Yeah, I agree Pete. I guess we were talking about who can help the team now. Maybe tangible isn't the correct word. |

i wonder when the hell this happened?
dont remember anything serious in the DET game, and they practiced Tuesday right? He also was taking warmups Wednesday night.
very strange and very concerning. 2 years in a row now with hot starts for zib only for an injury to pop up. |

In warmups? That would be odd. Unless it was from a previous game with delayed symptoms. |

Ryan McDonagh didn't become a Ranger until a year and a half after the Gomez deal, so Montreal initially won the whole tangible thing on that one |
