It's a pretty similar trade. So idk why you wouldn't compare it.

if you completely ignore that the Rangers got rid of a 6.5 mil a year cap hit without retaining any salary, and obtained a top 7 draft pick, yeah, I guess they are similar

Looks like Derek Dorsett's NHL career is over due to a back issue.
- airjan23

He was off to the races this season. At one point, he had more goals than any Ranger about 15 games in or so.

With a deadline to get rid of that cap hit, or else being stuck with a no trade clause for the remainder of the contract. The Rangers did well in that Stepan trade, IMO. Of course, Andersson has to turn out with the 7th overall pick, but that's always a risk you take with draft picks.

The Rangers traded 2 NHL players for future assets they have yet to make an impact. As a result they had cap space. The Devils traded 2 NHL players for an NHL player. Little less cap space available. So yeah they're similar.

there isn't any other team that would have accepted Stepan in a trade without forcing the Rangers to keep some of that cap hit

it's like all of sudden all the Ranger fans who complained Stepan wasn't a #1 center have had that Men In Black thing where their memories were erased

Losing Stepans cap helped sign Shatty

Zibanejad not on the ice for practice. McDonagh with Holden. Staal with Smith. Desharnais between Kreider and Buchnevich.

Let me dumb it down:

To NYR: DeAngelo(AHL) and Andersson(SHL). To ARI: Stepan and Raanta.

To NJD: Vatanen and a 3rd. To ANA: Henrique, Blandisi and conditonal 3rd.

So yeah they are similar.

Holland reports to Hartford, but NYR will keep an eye on him. They've considered him before.

Also keep in mind that any cap space the Rangers saved is going to be spent this coming off-season when they need to resign players like Hayes, Miller, Vesey, Skjei...all due pay raise is serious ways (other than Vesey).

I am really struggling to see the similarities between the to deals. They were entirely different motivations for both of them. The Devils deals is a more of a hockey deal, trading excess for need. The Rangers deal was more of a cap, future deal.

I guess, in the end, I just don't really give a flying (frank) about the Devils deal.

So you would rather have Vatanen, and not have Andersson, Deangelo, and Shatty?

I'm not the numbers guy, but I don't think they would have been able to fit Shattenkirk if Vatanen was here.

We are going to have to bring Kelly Kisio out of retirement to play center.

Just like last season. He's on fire and then gets injured. Hope he doesn't take three months to get back on pace.

Kinda, like Jim said; they used Stepan's money to sign Shattenkirk. The money they'll get to sign those you mentioned is a little bit of bump in the cap and Nash's cap hit coming off the books.

To what is this discussion even relevant? Saying the Devils did better than the Rangers? Saying that the Rangers should have traded Stepan in a Vatanen deal?

No they wouldn't have. I just think that the while both the Devils and Rangers overpaid a bit, the Devils got something tangible back in their deal with Vatanen.
