In retrospect, it is clear his focus is on changing Rochester culture and performance 1st and foremost.
Sign a couple of guys to make it look good, stealthy tank.
Trade a couple guys who don’t fit into longer term vision, build through the draft.
It hurts for this season, next year will be a balancing period, clearing out dead weight and bloated contracts. Bring up a couple guys, slowly.
2019 is the breakout year, promote from within, acquire pieces and parts.

Tough couple years ahead

U might be sssuming too much there
This trade deadline & offseason could give us a better look into what he’s thinking

Are we close to a Playoff team that can be built into a contender?
Or does he think we need to “have a couple tough years” to try & get more top end talent?

What happens with Kane will be the first indicator

Maybe.
I think this team has major issues and patching a couple of holes will have them middling like the Bills. They are missing major parts, not tweaks.
I hope my thoughts are correct.

botterill would grab that in a heartbeat if that was the offer...am thinking he and andersson are probably off limits with a first rounder...maybe botts can get one of those two straight up
- Michael Pachla

If it looks like Kane can't be resigned at a reasonable contract, I would love Andersson straight up for him.

i'm lowering my sights on a prospect like sean day or a first rounder...anything more----like day and a second rounder or a first rounder and mid-lower prospect would be great

I have this feeling - it’s a lot like the feeling I had for most of the second half this afternoon -that we’re going to be very dissatisfied with the result of Kane’s pending FA.

Of course, things turned out ok this afternoon, so who knows?

too many bad contracts to re-sign him...and I'm not 100% certain signing him to a 7-year deal, which is probably what he'll be looking for, is such a good idea

Yeah a lot of people have placed pretty high expectations on what they want in return. As of right now he's the top trade bait so I imagine he'll get something worthwhile in return.

I like to look at it as worthwhile asset+avoiding a bad value contract.

It wouldn't surprise me if this changed and contract talks heated up again. If his agent is as clued in as the insiders(have to think they would be) it doesnt really sound like anyone is going to give him serious term. This at a time when he was red hot too.

If I'm an NHL player now, I take a look at 90% of the max-term deals out there and realize it actually isn't smart to sign one. None of them seem to go to term unless it's Crosby, Ovechkin, etc... Which Kane must know he isn't... I hope...

Yeah, but they're fully guaranteed. No team is stupid enough to buy a guy out with 5 years left. Well, other than the Islanders. Yashin just came off their books last year I think. And even when bought out they still get a chunk plus what their next contract would be. They'd be stupid to not sign one.

I still don’t understand what J Botts was thinking in that respect?

What did he think Griffith & the rest of these borderline NHLers brought to the table?
Gionta was actually pretty decent for us last year

- jdfitz77

They bring the lottery, jbotts wants a top pick.

Who wouldn't? Your a new gm, seriously wouldn't you want to have 2 solid top picks in a row.

Tmgm wanted it. He got silent sam and jack.
