At first I thought the idea was crazy, but after a little time to consider it, the idea of trading for Chara might not be too bad after all. Assuming Boston would be willing to trade him and the price isn't too high, it could work.

I don't watch many Boston games, so I really don't know how much he's slowed down, but if he could still be an effective 2nd pairing guy for us, it might be a big help this year.

If we want a young potential top pairing defender its going to cost us the moon. Getting someone like Chara to help out in the short term while we see what happens with our own defense prospects might be the smart choice.

Another vet mentor that has a lot of experience (and a reputation our younger guys will probably respect) might be good for some of our younger defensemen.

This. Who knows, Lou may surprise us and strike a deal for a young d or a guy with term. However, that is an offseason trade. Especially close to the draft when teams have players they want in the draft and want the 1st,2nd rounders to ensure they get them. Dosnt hurt to wait and see who's going to hit the FA market too....

Chara is still affective. He would improve this team a lot with experience and play.

If they can get him for the return Smith got and a bit more for the experience. Why the (frank) not.

The same was said about Hainsey being too slow....but Chara is the better d man so...

It stopped being funny years ago.

I loved the pre season predictions of how good the Oilers and Habs will be in here in the offseason.

Oilers are a surprise. The Habs? Who da faq said they’d be any good? Their defence got worse, their abysmal offence stayed the same (yeah, I said it again. (frank) you Scabbies). Doesn’t help Price has been crap when he isn’t knocking up underaged teens/cops/yo momma/whatever the “roomers” are saying. They have one of the dumbest GMs in the league. What I’m trying to say is...

The Habs suck, and it’s very funny to watch.

I wouldn't mind the physical presence but he is a pylon out there these days.
- Aetherial

i cant argue the pylon part but his main use would be the pk and defensive zone starts. we dont need him to be mobile so much as we need him to be physical and a net clearing presense. its a short term move hopefully otherwise ...no.

I think being 40 has to lower the price a tad.

But the Leafs have a lot of good winger prospects to offer. Boston has some really good young d and d prospects.

Prospect, 2nd, Leivo?

the old prospect, pick and a roster player. Does that get it done? Does it need to be Kap?

Then they could unload Komarov for picks.

They desperately need a guy to get more D zone starts. Zaitzev is on his own in that regard.

big Z and little Z as a pairing

Fake and Aetherial or aardvark can't remember which. Whichever one is a Habs apologist.

Oilers are junk. That's easy to see. It was easy to see in the off-season too. After McDavid (and LD) there's (frank) all there. People still rate RNH for some reason?

Never ever trade or draft a Strome. (frank)ing useless tits them kids.

Defense is woeful. People like Klefbom as well for some reason.

Talbot, tbf I think everyone thought he would play better than he is.

I didn’t expect the Oilers to contend for the Cup, just not contend for top lottery odds.

I was wondering the same. Hanging out with Hanley, Kaptaan, BeatleJohn and Hartboro Swords I think.

I agree that it is mostly just sad seeing that franchise still sucking. The only reason to enjoy it is because they were dumb enough to hire Chiapet and it's funny seeing him slowly trade away every promising asset that team had acquired over previous years of suckage.

I have to admit I didn't think they'd be this bad.

I can't believe that getting Chara as a rental is a feasible conversation for Leaf fans these days. Not the move itself being crazy or not, the fact that within three years, trading for a big name vet rental player is a reasonable idea. You start to look at the standings and the other teams and think...why can't they take a serious run this year? The window is now, that's (frank)ed up.

Where's the dude that kept saying the Leafs will have injuries and sophomore slumps and with their D and goalies will come crashing to earth...this was just before Matthews got hurt and they won six in a row with back-to-back shutouts. I won't be taking any more betting tips from that guy, I'm increasingly skeptical about his predictive powers.

Whats great is the Leafs are in a spot where they can sell depth from their forward group. I would not at all be surprised to see Komarov go for picks at the deadline if they found a top 4 D. They have the guys internally to replace him now

Yeah, they have a few different guys that look like real players that aren't even in the lineup now. There's a bunch of options. You have to think the Leafs are very likely to make some kind of move at the deadline.

What's really cool is that the Leafs are this far ahead from where they were, and their best players are still relatively inexperienced kids. Marner hasn't even hit puberty yet. Or how much of a beast is Matthews gonna be with more experience and training, still?
