It would be nice to maybe add Jersey native John Carlson in the offseason if he gets to FA

Even if OEL were available, I wouldn't trade for him. With the amount of teams throwing really good offers for him, I think AZ should consider moving him since it's a seller's market for D. They could probably get, as someone else listed, a first, and two blue chip prospects for him, and maybe even more than that.

I don't see him as a #1 d. If I was Montreal, I'd want him bad, because I think he could play with Weber...

I don't see that he's exactly what NJ needs.

OEL's stats aren't shocking. Relatively low for all this 'hype'. If you compare is seasonal stats to Rafalski, they are very similar and maybe more impressive from Brian's side.

His stats are on par with your B+ rated offensive dman.

OEL is a good DMAN, but I would agree he is overrated. I would love him on NJ but wouldn't give up what AZ would prob ask for.

OEL is a top 10 or so Dman in the league and he's 26, there is no over rating that. If you get the shot to add him without completely gutting your team you do it.

Agreed. Smelly, tell this bunch of hooligans here to accept me. As I think my time on Jan's blog might be coming to a close. Not much more I can do there.

He's played on horrid teams. His advanced metrics are all really good. His traditional numbers are good. Put him on team like LA, Chicago or Tampa and his points would jump up. He'd be a perennial Norris finalist.

Honestly I would throw a big offer for OEL. Something like Henrique, Severson Zacha and a pick. Obviously don't start there but something along those lines. OEL is top 5 D in the league imo
- Devilspep87

Or wait for him to hit free agency...

if he can be had without an extreme overpayment, he's what I want. I think he'll slow down quite a bit in the next few years and be Greene 2.0.

I look at players who can actually play defense... like Drew Doughty or Alex Pietrangelo or Shea Weber.

The league only has about 10 #1 guys in it, most the rest of the league is "first pairing", which means you need a good duo to fulfill the role where as a #1 bonafide guy you could put with just about anybody and they'll keep afloat.

OEL needs to be babysat. Anyone who constantly remains in the minuses even in front of a decent goaltender is someone that needs to be babysat by a good homer. Our only good homer is Andy Greene. If you put OEL with Severson, they're "probably" going to get lit up... maybe not since Severson has shown moderate improvement in the back-end, but I wouldn't throw away four blue chip assets to acquire an offensive D who needs to be babysat.

Forgot to mention... AG and OEL shoot left... so there's incompatibility issues, that's why I mentioned Severson as a partner.

When people play on bad teams, they're "often" part of the reason. Phil Kessel may be a notable exception, as well as Taylor Hall, but that's because they're wingers.

The good thing about being a winger is that you're not to be held accountable for how much your team sucks (well you shouldn't, people still piss on guys like Pacioretty when Montreal does bad)... the bad thing about being a winger is that it's hard to be a leader for the team and affect the outcome of a game other than by scoring a goal, and if your defense sucks, you're always hemmed in your own end, and if you're constantly playing from behind, your job is harder.

+\- is a terrible stat. I’m not a believer that advanced stats are the be all end all for a player, but can certainly be used to support an argument. OELs 5v5 CF% and Fenwick relative to his team is always positive, pointing to him being the one doing the “baby sitting”. Also his 5v5 zone starts are always lopsided towards defensive zone starts. Again not an indicator of a guy that needs babysitting.

He would be the best defender we’ve had since Niedermayer. All that being said, it’s highly unlikely he is headed here anyway. Have fun playing with the stats. Don’t see how he isn’t considered a #1 guy.

Well, looks like we don’t have to argue about who loses playing time when MOJO comes back.

Between Butcher, Severson and Moore we have defenders who can move the puck pretty well. What we lack is guys who can play shut down defense. While I'd love to have OEL on the team I'd be happy to get someone who can nail down the top spot playing D.

I actually think +/- is a very important stat. Look no further than EK65...

One example...

2013-2014... 74pts total. 31 of those on PP so that don't count for your +...

that means he potentially should be at +43 (74-31)

He was a -15 that season.

That is unacceptable for a DMAN and my main and only argument against EK65. Other than that he is perfect.

Ottawa's total differential was -29. +/- is a pointless stat.
