I hear you. Reaves is a non-topic with how bad everyone else on the team (minus Kessel and Sheary) is performing. I think Mike Johnston was fired during the terrible possession era, what's going to happen during this terrible PDO era? - eNDSo
It will all even out. Sid is still a top-10 player, he didn't magically regress a la Jonathan Cheechoo over the summer. Guentzel may not put up numbers similar to last year, but he'll be better. The defense is a mess, though. |

As you can clearly tell, there are several differently-colored lines, as well as a vertical and horizontal axis with major horizontal gridlines.

Look, if you can't handle a cartesian plot, I can do this in bar graph form, though I can't ensure that the numbers will be the same or that there will be the same amount of data sets.
Also, how would you say it's "anti-intellectual?" Are you saying that only "intellectual" people accept advanced hockey analytics as gospel? |

Yes, but he's been bashing Reaves all season without giving it to McKegg/Kuhnackel/Hags. Again, I agree that Reaves has AHL skill, but for all the hate RW has given him, he's actually been one of their better performers. That may say more about the others than about Reaves himself, but at least give the guy a bit of credit where it's due. If he's performing as expected but others are performing even worse than him, shouldn't more of his spite be at those players as opposed to Reaves? That was all. - jmatchett383
You have been here long enough to know that each year, Ryan picks a whipping boy to beat slowly to death with a deluge of fancy stats over the ensuing 80 games...AKA the Brandon Sutter Memorial Award. There's a whole ceremony at the beginning of each year and a crown of thorns that the offending player wears under his helmet during each game. Previous recipients have been MAF, Rob Scuderi, Brooks Orpik, Nick Spaling, Craig Adams, and the aforementioned Craig Adams. Usually Ryan isn't even wrong, its just that the dead horse beating is great entertainment. |

Green is on even days games, red odd for MJ, Blue even for MS & yellow odd.
There should be violet & pink showing actual mean for both but it's less confusing having less information (& easier to draw your own conclusion which will vary greatly between different people assessing the information). All in all its a win win for statisticians everywhere. |

True, but it's just annoying.
Yes, well know it was bad asset management. Yes, we all know that he has a limited skillset. Yes, we know that he is not a fast skater or a great puck mover/carrier. But FFS, he's not Link Gaetz or even Gino Odjick, he actually has a tiny bit of skill in the offensive zone and doesn't simply go around punching people randomly, while RW would have you think he's a psycopathic serial killer rapist with the way he talks. |

Here we go again. Going to keep hammering on goals-for and boxcars because that's a better story than the Penguins are getting great chances and getting terribly unlucky.
There's a team at the start of every season that has a ridiculously low shooting percentage compared to their expected shooting percentage based on shot quality. This season it's us. Those teams always regress (progress) to the mean, which is to say the Penguins will be fine and nothing needs to change about the system.

However, it'll probobly be Archibald in and Kuhnhakel elevated for just the one game. I bet if geno hits IR Sprong gets a nice look. |

A question on the blog.
What underlying numbers are closer to a Cup? The Caps last couple of years? Rags before that?
Here's the real question.
What was the last Cup champ that had great underlying numbers 20 games in & what were they? |

Well, I know Chicago was blowing the league away until the halfway point of the 12/13 season. Other than that, I don't know. |

I would bet a lot of money Rowney slots in at 4C. Oh yeah, we still have Rowney. Why try something creative when we have a plug waiting in the wings? |

I do agree this would be a good time to give Guentzel a shot at playing center. It would also open up the opportunity for Spong to slide in and play on Sid's wing for a trial.
I definitely see this as a better option than sliding Rowney into the lineup.

I think the backup goalie situation is the biggest problem at the moment. The team can't play Murray ever single game and if they try they have no chance in the playoffs as he will be burned out (or possibly injured) by then.
Having Jarry up and sitting on the bench for the season could cause him to get rusty and hurt his development. Ideally he needs to either get a substantial amount of nhl starts or be sent back down to wbs. I am actually in favor of giving him at least 30% of the starts, if he is not going to be sent down and provided that the defense doesn't hang him out to dry.
The Niemi signing was really bad. I made the mistake of drafting him in the first round for my fantasy team several years ago (back when he played for SJ) and he was largely responsible for killing it. He was the backup for a team that didn't even make the playoffs last season and looked really bad when he did play for them. I questioned the signing at the time and it looks much worse in retrospect. Having said all this, the team played terrible defense in front of him. |
