Natural regression is bound to happen when the team gets better. for example

JVR's ATOI is sitting at 14 something, kane is at 20. In the lineup you posted where the forwards become deep, the ice time gets spread out. Most often the wingers are affected.

Also in a scenario where the defense isn't an eyesore, goals start coming from the blueline as well. That means more shooting options for any 5 man unit. The plays drawn up are no longer just pass it to kane. When a volume shooter loses the ability to take all the shots, his numbers will naturally decline.

Ok... but in that case,
Aren’t we a good team?

And isn’t that the goal?

I guess to your specific point, I’d say that a loss on Kane’s production is covered in gaines in production where we actually have a 3rd line that scores

But if we move Kane,
and Nylander is on line 1...
does he produce as much as Kane?
Probably not
And does whoever slots in on line 3 produce as much as Nylander would in that same spot?
I’d also say probably not

I have no trouble believing JB can find another Pouliot to produce on line 3 and Nylander can pot 20 or so with Eichel.

I’m asking Mittelstadt & Nylander to be good 3rd line players

Your way would have them on the top line, right?

So which way are they more likely to succeed?

- jdfitz77

No, you need to get better players at that top line. And yes, better than Kane.

Kane + Nylander >>> Nylander + “Pouliot”
I don’t even think it’s close

And again...
we have the Cap Room

Kane+nylander and 6 mil cap room

Nylander+"pouliot"+assets+the seven mil we don't spend there

I agree it's not close

Oh, ok...
well how the F are we gonna do that?!

I keep hearing we can’t likely get Carlson,
but we’re gonna get Tavares or Stamkos or whoever?!

How exactly do u plan on doing that?

Those “assets” are more likely to become average players than good ones

And who are u spending the 7mil on?

Kane. I dont see him re signing for less than that.

Those assets can be used else where and they don't have to be come average. They can be compher's and Guhle's etc..

Why can’t we sign Kane & still hopefully draft that guy?

Bc Cap room?
Even if we hit...
we don’t have to pay that guy for 4 years at the earliest

So 2nd worst in league in goals for. 1 ahead of San Jose. I realize the D needs an upgrade, a true #1, but is scoring a bigger issue to resolve? I understand with puck moving D and pressing leads to more offense. But get some players, trade for them, draft them, who can puck the puck in the net.

What good is cap space if you don't use it on good players?

Kane is good, use the cap space on him. Send midround picks to get rid of bogo and moulson. Keep good players, trade bad ones. I don't subscribe to the theory that we'd be better off saving the cap space for some future player that may come down the line

Guys picked after 10 are MUCH MORE LIKELY to become like Girgensons than they are like Pasternak

I don’t believe that you just have a good scouting staff

I think all of us on the "trade Kane" boat are resigned to the fact that you aren't getting the defenseman for Kane directly or even as part of a package. The idea is to free up the space and acquire that defenseman another way, using the money you didn't pay Kane to do so.
- buffalofan19

Fine, show me how you're going to do that then. "We'll do it at a later date" doesn't hold.

I just used Girgs as an example of how most 1st rounders just end up being average players

Don’t see the point of trading Kane for someone who will be average for us in FOUR years or so

Plus we can keep Kane AND still have $$$ to get a defenseman however he plans to do so

Why not? This team is a disaster. It's going to take another couple of years to rebuild again.
