Truly a sad situation.
What a scumbag Cooke is - RickJames77
Well earned reputation for that D-Bag.
Although, when the Karlsson achilles tendon thing happened I couldn't believe (well, I guess I could) how it was immediately deemed intentional by so many. That's what happens when your reputation is Cooke level. |

One of the worst all time. Scott Stevens is no better - but he's treated like royalty. The hit he made on Kariya was a disgrace. - winsix
the elbow that turned lindros into a shadow of himself was pretty bad too.

The Refs missing the call on the initial play are just as much to blame as the players involved.
If Pacioretty goes to the box, Kadri doesn't have time to start looking to hurt someone.
Idiocy all around. - Scabeh
I'll just add one thing:
If you look at the ref cam, Weber jumps right back up, ready to throw the mitts.
I don't think he was hurt at all - more like just one of those things where you get zapped at home during blow-out - so you have to respond.
At the end of the day, I just don't think it was that big a deal.
I'm not a big fan of this trend in the NHL - which has really become prevalent in the last 5-10 years - that any big (but clean) hit needs to be met with a fight. |

Bergevin may be the only GM to make Chiarelli look good. At least one of the few. - RickJames77
Disagree with you on that one, only thing that saves Chiarelli is the fact that McDavid is on that team. He's pure poop, Bergevin is bad but there are a couple worse than him IMO, Sakic, Benning come to mind.

if they figure out a way to test for CTE in living people (on its way).. I bet they find out its not just hits to the head but 2 bodies colliding that can cause damage to the brain thats severe. - senstroll
It's rare that the initial impact causes the concussion, it's the brain subsequently smashing into the skull that does the damage. Anything that causes your head to move suddenly and rapidly enough to cause the brain to hit the skull will give you a concussion. |

I agree with this, it seems that it also usually happens when a team is being trounced.

Gary Suter - same thing crosschecked Kariya in the face and ended Gretzky's career basically. I hate that stuff.

I totally agree - and so does the NHL with the instigator penalty.
Although, that penalty drives me nuts when it's in retaliation for a dirty hit. Are you supposed to just take that sort of stuff on the chin? |

I don't mind it. Far more acceptable in my books than the staged fights, where two enforcers agree that they need to appear relevant, and drop the mitts. In this case, if Weber is pissed at the hit, let him drop the gloves, and take the instigator. It's an emotional game, and the fighting is all that being released.
Having teammates stand up for each other is fine, too. I'd rather see a fight that defuses the tension than a retaliatory dirty hit later, that's more likely to cause an injury. |

Whenever a player tries to hurt Weber, he usually gets up and pummels the guy into a pulp so he never tried something like that again.
He wasn't hurt, but I think it has more to do with him being a monster of a human being (physically) than with hit no being dangerous/meant to hurt him.
As for the bolded, I agree that it's kinda silly, but as long as the rulebook is applied and penalties for instigation are given... I guess you live with the consequences. |

benning is coming around with his drafting. his trades and FA's...meh.
but Doorion in ottawa made both benning and sakic look good in trades. i think that says a lot. |

A lot of this comes down to the refs missing poop.
honestly, I don't care what the "vibe on the ice" is or any poop like that. Call the rule book. That's why you have it.
Don't let things go because you want a more exciting game. The game will be plenty exciting on it's own. Once players know that things are being called seriously, they won't take as many penalties. Slashing is down this year because they're paying attention to it. |

Cooke was resposible, no one can tell intent, therefore if its based on reputation, he should have received a max suspension. Even without intent, a player is resposible for his stick and the damage it inflicts, how could the player's skate be exempt from this?

Nothing, this doesn't deserve anything more than what was given on that play (the Refs got the call right and the Leafs had a powerplay in result).
Thank you all for the good, clean, discussion, it was very interesting and respectful. - Scabeh

It's the same with Kadri. He doesn't fight though, he just lays someone out or scores a goal.
Hitting Kadri is rarely a wise move. |
