Besides that disaster in traffic in the Cross Island Parkway leading to the main East to West arteries like the LIE, Northern and Southern State Parkways, Northern Blvd., etc., how about all the basic streets through the local & private surrounding neighborhoods, that drivers will use as alternate routes to avoid first, that Cross Island Parkway? An arena built in Belmont that would hold multi events on a year round basis, isn't like passing Belmont Park Race Track while on that Cross Island Pkwy., where events are held at a minimum year round in contrast, with the 3rd horse race of the Triple Crown in the "Belmont Stakes", being the number one.

I'm not arguing that it would be logistically perfect, I said as much in previous posts in this thread. The reality is that there is no perfect answer for an Islanders arena, unless they head east which they will not do.

No matter where the Islanders play it will be (varying degrees of) flawed in some way, shape, or form.

One of my sources amongst the Board of Governors just told me that the Isles plan on draping Tavares with white carnations to get him to re-sign.

If I recall, the tax increase would have been about $75/year for residents.

It was their right to vote it down, but I'll bet you dollars-to-donuts that all the people that voted it down will be pissing and moaning when that site becomes a vacant, run-down dump that they don't want to look at and are still paying for in some capacity.

- eichiefs9

I couldn't recall the increase if that's what it was, "echiefs". I do recall the Lighthouse Project issue being covered then through all sorts of local NY media sources, as a noteworthy and at times, top news story. I guess that in today's times, even only a $75.00/year local resident tax increase was too much for some to bear, among all the other cost of living increased taxes and expenses. But it would be even more "sort of" costly to those, who like I mentioned earlier, would not benefit from that project at all.

Like I said, it was entirely their right to vote it down. And the reality is that, other than fans who go to games, no citizens benefit from professional sports venues being built.

But the fact that the Coliseum will now only host D-league basketball, some halfway decent concerts, and the odd goofy event like Disney on Ice. I don't think that place will generate enough revenue to remain financially viable. I firmly believe that the site will be a vacant dump that gets razed in the not-too-distant-future and I'm sure the outcry from the local residents will be plentiful.

Seating capacity-wise, yes they would be able to up the number of seats (if I recall they left the ability to retrofit an addt'l 2k seats).

But the real problem is that the concourse still remains as only one circular level and that's it. It used to be so horrifically congested in there between periods and before/after games that it almost seemed like it were a fire hazard. The bathroom lines would hilariously just cut horizontally through the concourse, to add some additional challenges of getting around. There wasn't even half as many bathrooms as they needed to accommodate everyone. When Tavares scored 15 seconds into OT against the Capitals in the '15 playoffs, I was standing outside waiting in line for a port-a-potty. I left to go to the bathroom before the overtime intermission.

They did add a walkway around the top of the lower bowl, which would help a little, but I think the same congestion problems would still exist because the arena is just poorly laid out for large crowds.

They could add the seating they may need, but the problem lies in that it would be the same old Coliseum with the same old problems, just some new paint and a stupid slinky-looking facade.

OK, please forgive me, no idea why I'm obsessing on this so much (I'm killing time, waiting for somebody to give me back something I need to work on), but I'm looking at a satellite photo:

(Edit: sorry, I linked to a google maps satellite photo, which franked the page)

It seems to me there's basically nothing surrounding the arena, so it would be relatively easy to build a new "exoskeleton" - basically a new structure around the existing building - so you could widen concourses and put in new bathrooms.

Would it be a pain in the ass? Heck, yes.

Would it be cheaper than building a new arena? Heck yes X2.

And judging by the link I provided above, it would probably be much easier to get the local approvals - meaning you'd be playing there a hell of a lot quicker than a new arena in Belmont.

there is no chance that Hextall trades Sanheim or Hagg plus a first for a UFA at years end. Doesn't reflect his plan, style, or his previous actions.

Not saying Hextall wouldn't make a trade, but they have been very few and very far in-between.

He has stated repeatedly that he will not trade players/ prospects or picks for players like JVR...age/ contract status. Not knocking JVR, was pi$$ed when Homer traded him.

If Homer is looking to trade a Sanheim or Hagg, then is would be for a player similar in age, and talent.

Just so very glad that Ek is not the GM of my teams.

You'd lose some parking if you did that and there is no public transportation available to the arena so that might be a problem.

I can't really answer any of that. I guess it's feasible, but I am willing to bet there are a million-and-one factors you or I don't know about that could make that impossible or improbable.

60 minutes of 3-on-3. Owners can reduce rosters, shrink ice size to allow more seats. Big $, everybody wins.

I really think you are over-reacting.

No way a modern sports facility would ever be allowed to just fall into disrepair.

All the old suburban grounds here (& even the old SCG), have a place where there's no seating & sloped grass so you can stand up & see the action called 'the hill'. You used to get on the cans there, make a mess of yourself & basically have a great time watching whatever sport was playing. There'd be blokes walking around in gorilla suits, shielas in bikinis in the sun on a hot day & just a really great party atmosphere.

Melnyk might be trying to make the hill great again!

It looked much different 30 years ago when I attended Wrestlemania 3. 93,000 there that day. When Hulk Hogan slammed Andre the Giant. Best match by far was Ricky the Dragon Steamboat beating Randy Macho Man Savage for the intercontinental title. ☺
