Flyers fans: Would you give up Sanheim or Hagg + a first for JvR?

i wouldn't give up Hagg for JVR straight up, let alone throw in a first.

They didn't draw worth a poop in Nassau.

They've broken the 15,000 mark once since 1986.

ONCE.

And the 14,000 mark only 6 times in the last 31 years.

Yeah and charging 5 bucks for a seat with a free hotdog qualify as a sold seat? Also give me a break putting the hurricanes on a pedestal as far as attendance your team won a cup in the recent past and still can't give away seats where as our team got transplanted from an arena nobody wanted to go to to an even worse arena with an horrible commute and experience. It's not as simple as saying nobody wants to see the islanders play. Thats the easy uninformed answer and you love spewing it to justify the canes existence like anyone gives a (frank)

I mentioned Carolina once to drive home the point about Isles attendance because of Carolina's historically bad attendance.

Isles have averaged more than 14,000 per night 6 times since 1986. SIX. You can't just dismiss that.

Yeah, they've been mismanaged and had arena problems, but not for 31 (frank)ing years.

The Isles have had an average attendance of less than 14,000 people 28 times out of 45 seasons. That's incredibly poor.
- BINGO!

What does that have to do with players wanting or not wanting to live on Long Island?

What does the Flyers winning the Cup have to do with arena attendance or the size of a team's fanbase. You can responding like a putz all you want, but the fact remains, the Isles don't draw squat and they have a limited fan base. When the Isles play road games, do you see hundreds of fans in the stands wearing Isles gear? Yeah, I didn't think so. You see that routinely when the Flyers are on the road.

Sorry if I struck a nerve, but facts or facts. Oh, and here are some more facts:
Flyers 16-17 average attendance: 19,644, 100% plus capacity
Flyers 17-18 average attendance to date: 19,336 99% capacity

Better luck next time.

Maybe some Islanders fans can chime in here:

Doesn't the local TV deal the Isles have (with MSG???) mean that attendance isn't quite so important?

And that it would be a big reason why a new owner wouldn't walk away from Brooklyn/Long Island/wherever the next arena might be?

Yeah they have a very lucrative deal with MSG that, in the really lean years, probably kept the team afloat. I forget the actual numbers, but it is very favorable to the Islanders.

Problem with "walking away" is that, if this deal to build an arena near the Belmont Park track falls through, there is really nowhere for them to play in this area. Reno'd Coliseum is out. All they did was slap some lipstick on a pig, it's still the same garbage arena with some fresh paint and a new facade. Barclay's is clearly an unfit home for a hockey team. That doesn't leave a whole lot else that is feasible.

The owners don't want to move the team but if Belmont doesn't work out I can't really imagine a scenario in which they stay in the area. That said, I have a hard time believing they would put all their eggs in the Belmont-basket if they weren't supremely confident that they would have the RFP approved for the arena.

What was the problem in 1988-2002?

It's bad when there are 7 million people on Long Island.

Most of which are Ranger fans. The Islanders attendance is undoubtedly historically putrid, but they play second-fiddle to a much longer-established team. LI and NYC are one-in-the-same and the overwhelming majority of fans' allegiances lie with the Rangers. Ignoring that fact is kind of a major thing, when looking at attendance.

I'm wondering if Belmont can come soon enough, though.

At the moment, it's just an idea. How long until you could realistically have shovels in the ground?

Probably a tough question to answer, but have the Isles had any kind of geographic shift of their fanbase? Is it still predominantly Long Islanders not from New York City, or did they have any success in attracting urbanites?

I'm just curious because last year (while staying in the upper west side) I went to an Islanders game (very easy via the subway) and the US Open (an absolute franking nightmare to get to). *

I don't think as a tourist I would be all that eager to make the hike out to Belmont, unless there was some super-easy rapid transit option.

Yes, I realize tourists shouldn't be a factor in picking a new location - I'm just curious here.

* Separate trips to NYC - just so you don't call BS on my riveting story.

We went on Presidents' Day - so tickets weren't cheap.

Compared to the Leafs they were still cheap, but they certainly weren't $6.

But if you want to see a corporate sporting event, holy frank, you need to go to the US Open.

And by "need to go" I mean "need to go on somebody else's corporate account."

I've never been to a sporting event before where you get a gin and tonic - in a souvenir glass!
