Absolutely! Martel plays bigger than his size and has some nasty in his game. He reminds me a bit of Danny Briere in that respect. All the guy does is score goals, haven't we all been wanting a shoot first kind of guy? I'd much rather be giving this kid a shot than watching Weise fumble the puck and accomplish nothing.

Weise has size. He has an important role in the lineup. You can't take him out for someone smaller. You can't have too many small players in the lineup or on a line. Just look at Tampa, whose biggest forward is 6'1 and has an entire second line 5'10 and under. DOOOOOOMED.

I dont advocate for a small team. I advocate for a team with generally the most skilled players, and a heavy focus on overall skating/speed.

Flyers chose to invest in these smaller skilled players. If you wont play them, especially when you have a choice of benching Weise/Lehtera then dont bother drafting them.

I'd love for one of the media guys to ask the rationale for making the above decision. Flyers play Konec, Ghost and Weal, I'd say they are helping them win more than not.

- flyer_nutter

If the Flyers thought that Martel was ready and capable of producing offensively in the NHL, why wouldn't they call him up? Do they not want to improve? Is it possible that they feel that right now, continuing to develop in the AHL is the best place for Martel? Do you really think it comes down to not wanting to bench Weise or Lehtera? You have zero basis for believing that the Flyers are currently making a mistake by not having Martel in the NHL. You're giving zero thought that asking a young player to do what he's not ready to do could be detrimental to his development.
Gostisbehere, Konecny, and Weal are NHL players. That doesn't mean that Martel is,or isn't. Really has squat to do with it. If anything it shows that they're willing to play smaller players if they're capable.

One would think if the club thought it has too many undersized players it would stop drafting them?

There is a sick obsession with guys like VDV, Belle, Lehtera and Weise - choosing them over the unknown in a kid. Can't have too much youth on the club, gotta show them boys what it means to be a pro.

Because god knows their line of thinking had consistently shown to be the model of success in the 'new NHL'

Playing the zombies year after year instead of kids banging on the door is moronic.

The Flyers are showing under Ron Hextall that they know how to develop and handle young players.

You have your head in the sand ignoring the young players the Flyers are and have been playing.

Cable is dying already. There is an NHL center ice app for free that can be found. All streams HD, your choice if away/home. No lagg.

I just look at the facts and draw reasonable conclusions from them. For example you claim they have an unhealthy obsession with players like Vandevelde and Bellemare, yet this season both have been replaced by Laughton and Leier, two younger players. Perhaps that is because the Flyers used role playing veterans to buy time until younger players are ready to take the next step and move up. We don't know what would've happened if Bellemare wasn't claimed. The Flyers last season were perfectly willing to add two 19 year old players to the roster, including playing one as their top defenseman. They added two more young players in Patrick and Sanheim this season. It seems to me that the Flyers have a process in how they decide who plays where and won't rush a player in favor of instant gratification if they don't feel a player is ready for it.

You just make irrational claims that the Flyers are unwilling to play young players and choose players like Weise and Lehtera over them. You also just assume that a player like Martel is ready for the NHL because he is scoring goals in the AHL and that the Flyers are going to Flyer and aren't keeping up with the "new NHL" because they haven't called him up.

Someone already asked Hextall about Martell and he said something about there not being room on the team with Konecny and Weal already in the lineup. He made some other crack during that exchange where he referenced team size or not wanting too many undersized players all in at once.

The Flyers management never, ever make mistakes. I mean come on, they even arranged for Mark Streit to get hurt so they'd have an opening to get Ghost in the lineup! They are hockey royalty. I mean jeez, this team hasn't missed the playoffs since, well, since uh, last season

Since the 04-05 lockout, 12 seasons have been played. The Flyers missed the playoffs in 4 of them and were bounced in the first round 4 other times. They've won a total of 7 playoff rounds since 2004 and none since 2012. Yeah, they don't make mistakes.

Look, for the most part, I'm on board with what Hextall is trying to do, but he's far from perfect. Mistakes have been made.

I would say they are kind of soft to begin with, so I wouldn't disagree with a concern of having too many small players.

Although if it comes between Weise/Lehtera and one of the AHL kids/Colin Mac- its choosing to drink milk a day past its expiry, or poop on a spoon.

He's been aight, minus FA where he has sucked big time.

I just feel its a half ass commitment to a youth movement/rebuild when you do some of the things him/Hak have done.

Is there such a thing as a team or NHL management that never ever makes a mistake? Do you know that they are making a mistake by not calling up Martel? I don't. Maybe they are. Easy to look in hindsight and make all the right calls. You look at the balance of the decision making and the overall process and focus on that. In my view, Hextall has the team headed in the right direction and patience is still needed. Of course there will be some setbacks and some speed bumps. Part of the process.
