I pretty much give most of the credit to Shanahan.
He came in with an open mind and listened, he didnt tell everyone he had the answers from Day 1.

Whether thats fair to give him pretty much all the credit, I dont know..but I do
I was never a big fan of his when playing, mostly because he was awesome and on other teams..but when he talks its easy to listen to him, he is not Burke arrogance and Nonis cluelessness

I heart Shanny

Nylander pick was awesome - only four first rounders of significant merit that draft year, and the Boston pick was pretty late. I would give the credit to Shanny. Nonis was a puppet after Burke was fired. At the end of the day though......it has more to do with the structure in place than an individual GM anyway. Look at the Oilers management team Ex players and booze buddies like McTavish and Keith Gretzky.... not exactly guys to compare with the fellows that Shanny has hired. We need a good guy for drafting.... um let's get Hunter, we need an analytics guy... how about Dubas? we need a cap guy... how about..... etc.
- winsix

Nah man, there is more than 4 for sure.
The leafs have two from that draft year in the first round Nylander and Kap (jury still out on Kap, but its safe to say he could be a regular NHL'er)
Then you have Pastrnak, Ehlers, Ekblad, draisaitl, fabbri, and Bennett (also Reinhart).
And still potential in Ritchie, Virtanen, Fleury, Perlini and larkin to name a few.

Well I just pointed out that Burkie said he could have picked Tavares.
Not too surprised that the guy is telling different stories there.. but I am aware that NYI was probably never going to trade the pick.

- MaximusAurelius

you're hearing what you want to hear. the behind the scenes footage gives context for burke's draft day interview answer.

that might be a little harsh.
Reinhart is not performing at a 2nd overall should but he's still decent.
Two 40 plus pt seasons.
Bennett, hasnt lived up to the hype for sure and not a great pick at 4 ...but has 66 pts in 176 games. Not good...but not horrible.

Nylander was an f'n steal!

At the time, I remember a bunch of guys were saying picks 7-12 have the same potential as 2-6. Which was why a lot of teams tried to trade down to pick Nylander/Ehelers/Werenski

There are some decent players, Ehlers, Pastrnak, Larkin and Nylander were good picks, Fleury is a 21 year old rookie this year, Virtanen same, Ritchie is ok but not a great player, Bennet and Reinhart have both been disappointments.

one minute onwards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST9bLG_Aqa4

he specificially says the isles aren't moving the pick.

he also explicitly states that TB wanted schenn for the 2nd and he wasn't interested.

there was no tavares trade. and again, it doesn't pass the smell test. snow didn't trade schenn away the year before for nothing only to demand him back in a tavares trade.

- Tumbleweed

he says they take the best player available no matter what
he traded up to pick Biggs and Brad Ross... what does that say about his ability to judge the best available ..

so you didn't listen to the clip, that's ok.
I understand Burke is cocky, but he did suggest he could have 'made that pick' (referencing to Johnny T)

- MaximusAurelius

I did.
You are oblivious. That's ok.
JT was never being moved. Everyone and their mom knew that. burke as well.
Burke was referring to 2nd or 3rd.
Moving on.

Niemi to the habs.

I saw and article the other day saying that if Lindren keeps playing well he will push Price out.

It's not just Toronto, when things aren't going well the media is clueless everywhere
