In times like this, I look to the GM Mode of EA NHL96.

3 third liners can usually be swapped for 1 first liner.

And in NHL96, if the league turned down your trade, you could always over-ride it. I think Lou actually has that power in the league today.

Actually Travis Yost has an excellent article about draft picks and NHL games played. I think the same logic applies here. If you have three 3rd liners, they'll total 3 times as many games played as a single first liner. You're getting three times the value.

I won’t lose sleep if they rip up his contract, but I can’t see the leafs doing that. He’s a pretty good player. They will get something for him. It’s not like he’s done anything wrong or been a pain for the organization.

It was terrible to begin with and looks even worse seeing how good Matthews has turned out. If it was A terrible draft year with no clear #1 it may not have looked as bad. But it was awful.
