We were talking this yesterday, not sure if you saw my response at 10ish, but my general thought on trading up in the draft.
Its deep, particularly for Dman, and I expect to pick between 13-18 and 25-28 from St. Louis. A few mocks have about 8-12 dman going in the upper 20 picks, leaving a fair few forwards on the board at the 13-18 range; however, I dont know the quality of the forwards expected in that range. Maybe you can get one there if a slew of dman go higher in the draft?
I guess it depends on who the flyers identify as their targets. They have show they have specific targets and not afraid to make moves to get them (Konecny, Rubstov and Ratcliffe come to mind). I wouldn't be upset if they traded up.
With all that said, I still feel that the better choice is to hold on to the picks and draft BPA.
Also, I dont think that their contract number is a reason to move up as Mono suggested. They have 8-11 minor league contracts that they likely are not going to resign. Plus they hold rights for at minimum 3 years. - VladDrag
I listed contracts as a secondary reason, not THE reason. Kase, Rubtsov, Twarynski (likely), Allison, Sandstrom, Hart, Bunnaman, Laberge (who looks like a bust but he has his ELC), possibly Marody or Laczynski, possibly Hogberg or Bernhardt (though they probably bring one or both over the following year, but Hogberg especially is an underrated gem that people will soon know about) -- most of those players are being added next year. The others the following year, along with many of the 2017 picks.
There is going to be a glut on the Phantoms starting next year, and there are only so many spots. They've been hoarding kids too, not trading them (not judging, just saying). And the Flyers love to have kids spend years down there working their way up the roster from small role to big role as veterans eat big minutes, which adds to the glut (now I'm judging). A potential logjam is real.
Flyers have potentially 10 picks this year already. They're not picking 10 players. I imagine they trade 1 or whatever for a future pick and package another 2-3 together to move up somewhere. They've been drafting a lot of college/overseas kids lately too, probably planning a bit, so they have longer timelines to bring some kids into the fold. I'd like to keep both 1sts ideally, but trading up with one -- using other assets, not the 1st, maybe even part of a bigger trade -- to get someone they love makes a ton of logical sense. They've done it almost every year, so I don't expect it to be different. |

In my mind, that's not the right attitude to have when drafting. I say aquire picks, get as many quality players in your farm system. If you are lacking in one area, you can always attempt to make a trade in another one.
This is just my personal take on drafting. - VladDrag
The Flyers wouldn't package picks just for the sake of doing it. They'd need to like a guy a lot and be certain he's not going to drop to them anyway. I'm absolutely OK with that kind of fine tuned approach under the right opportunity. The Flyers are better right now than I thought they'd be going into the season. The next big step is bringing along the young goalies. |

Hard to get that excited about this squad with the makeup of the middle 6. Patrick helps but he’s still only 19. They loaded up that top line which is looking like the right decision. But man they are struggling finding scoring throughout the lineup |

I know you didnt say that as your main argument, nor did I mean it negatively towards you. Allow me to explain a bit.
I do agree about the log jam situation, honestly dont know how you cant. I am saying while it may be true thEy are up against a contract limit, its not a reason to trade up.
And on that situation, I have seen a lot of people say its a good problem to have. Well yes it is, but the flyers havent done enough to mitigate this issue. They should have brought up one of the 3 rookies last year to see what they had at the nhl level. Because, really its about making the best nhl team you can.
Also agree about moving up. They can do that, but it has to be for the right guy, as you have pointed out and I elluded to earlier.

Flyers playing like poop tonight imo Any secondary scoring has been gone since the start of the season. I'm afraid this is what we will see on off again all year. |

I think I’ll keep the replay of this game in case I ever have insomnia. It’ll put me right out. |

Another home loss. Not very inspiring. Call Patrick what you want but shuffling lines around his spot not very smooth. |
