There's no magic number, but there's really no reason why he couldn't play 76 games if he stays healthy. All the worrying about goalies playing too many games is just more overthinking and 29 teams needing to find reasons every year why they didn't win. Playing goalie really isn't any more physically demanding than being a skater.

Smith is a veteran and he knows his body. If I was Gulutzan I'd leave the decision with Smith as to when he needs a night off. If you can trust Smith to take the nights off when he needs them, there's no reason to not let him play if he's not banged up, especially since the Flames have the worst goalie in the NHL as their backup.

I doubt i'll convince you but I think being a Goalie is much different than being a skater. Goal is IMO the most important position and the goalie has to be mentally sharp for 60min. Add to that, there is way more pressure on a goalie than a skater. It's not the physical demands nearly as much as the mental side. I think 60-65 games is the max I'd play him and I wouldn't leave it up to him as it's hard to tell when you're starting to burn out.
