From Elliotte Friedman’s 31 thoughts:
Sometimes we forget athlete’s are people too and have families, the first one puts that all in perspective:

8. Like most teams, the New York Rangers blast music in the dressing room as they prepare for their pre-game warmup. About a minute before they hit the ice last Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, Henrik Lundqvistturned down the music. Three hours earlier, a terrorist attack killed eight people near his residence in Tribeca.

For me, it was very emotional,” he said Sunday. “On game days, I keep my phone in airplane mode. (When I heard about the attack), I didn’t know where my kids were, if they were safe. All the buildings are in lockdown. It’s frightening.” His children, aged five and two, were safe. (Lundqvist says his eldest’s favourite building is the Freedom Tower.)

A couple other Rangers spoke too, but he did not want to name them. “We turned off the music and we talked. I just felt it was important to express my feelings. It was an important game, more than the two points. Anyone who knows the history of New York understands what happened in the past. I wanted to reinforce to the younger players that we had to come together as a group. We had to show New York that we cared for them and we were going to play for them. I was proud the way we answered that game.”

Trailing 4-2 after two, the Rangers scored four unanswered in the third to win 6-4. It was the first victory of a current four-game win streak.

9. One of the great things about being an NHL sideline reporter is going on-ice at Madison Square Garden to interview a Ranger after a big win. There’s something about being in the middle of “The World’s Most Famous Arena” with a delirious crowd celebrating the person standing next to you. It’s very powerful.

What was it like that night to salute the crowd after New York came back to win? “It’s hard to know what to say,” Lundqvist answered. “You want to be respectful but supportive. Give the people some good energy.” He, and his teammates, were successful.

10. On another subject, I asked Lundqvist if he’d ever reach out to Carey Price, as his Canadiens’ counterpart goes through a tough time.

“No,” he answered. “But he knows that the cream always comes back to the top. He’s so skilled and experienced, he will come back strong. I’ve been there before. There’s a lot of speed and skill, and if you’re not on top of your game, you will pay the price. (Goalies) understand what each other goes through. You can’t always be on top. How you deal with it determines how quickly you come back up

I actually don't hate that. I mean I'm tired of seeing the hawks every year but...What can you do?
- tomburton99

Well, I don't care that much because I haven't watched one in years anyway...but it's just ridiculous to see the same 4-or-so teams get recycled over and over. I get why they do it, don't get me wrong...but it's just boring and played out to me. Also, I utterly despise anything related to Notre Dame. So that sucks too.

I can't believe he actually asked Lundqvist if he'd reach out to Carey Price to help him through his struggles.

So, do I. Even fake long distance girlfriends, which I loved when I was in the 4th grade.

I have absolutely no rational reason for that, other than that I have met far too many intolerable Notre Dame fans with absolutely no connection to the school other than having seen Rudy.

I can't really find a good reason to defend my disdain for that university outside of "I just can't stand everything about them".

I root for Notre Dame, didnt go there, had no affiliation with the team whatsoever, but when I was a kid it was the one CF team you could count on being on TV every week, whether they sucked or not.

I almost went there. Was deciding between Michigan and Notre Dame. In the end, Michigan was just more my speed. I don't have anything really against Notre Dame other than it's a football rivalry and they are somewhat smug but people say that about Michigan fans to. Lol

I've told this story 9 million times, but I met my wife on the Notre Dame field after Michigan won on a last second field goal in 1994 and all of us miscreants went on the field (for whatever reason Notre Dame used to put opposing fans right behind the goal posts and low). Six days later we went on a date. Six years later we were married. All because of some field goal kicker.

Pete knows my sense of humor. I'm sure Mrs.V would answer the same way.

Never trust a couple that says they never fight and at times want to throw the other in a wood chipper.

I have mixed emotions about Rudy.

Yeah, in the way its an inspirational story. But, in other ways, what the hell kid? Devote so much time and effort basically being cannon fodder for world class college athletes, getting your assed kicked for years, and for what? To play one lousy down in a blowout game that nobody gave a hoot about?

Imagine if your kid was doing something like that? I would probably tell him to go (frank)ing study and make something of yourself, you dotard.

I agree the real Rudy must have been one strange dude to get beat up everyday for basically nothing but maybe it’s true he wanted to do it for his dad which I can understand.

BREAKING: Plane that crashed into Gulf of Mexico registered to #MLB All-Star, Cy Young Roy Halladay; Unknown if he was in the aircraft

Oh man, it's awful regardless of who it was...but, wow.

Apparently there's a press conference at 4:15 to release the ID of the person killed. Seems like it would be very odd to announce a press conference for a small plane crash if it weren't Halladay that died...but who knows.

Wow. I knew he was into automobiles, like old school muscle cars. Didn't know anything about his interest in planes. That's unfortunate. I maintain he could have won 300 games if those Blue Jays teams were such poop.

He's somewhat active on Twitter. So you'd expect him to tweet he was ok if it wasn't him. So I agree with you.
