And I love you.
It's hard for me to admit that about a Leafs fan, but I suppose love knows no bounds. |

I think as long as you guys right the ship sooner than later you guys can still make playoffs. The pacific is still wide open. |

I think you're right. Fortunately for the Oil, the Pacific kinda sucks. |

Nope. Sorry. No team in the history of the nhl or sports for that matter, has ever made the playoffs after a 2-5 start. Season was over 2 games ago. - leonkennedy
No one said it wasn't possible. Just more difficult and given the way they've played a turn around in short order isn't guaranteed.
Also I think Friedman must have been high last night on the panel when he suggested oilers should be calling about a RNH for Pacioretty trade |

I used to think this way too. There’s like 70+ games left!!
But yeah, statistically speaking, a team gets to like 2-8 or something and the season is most likely lost. There’s just so much parity in the league it’s extremely tough to come back from that
94ish to get into the playoffs so you need to go like 40-20-10 the rest of the way. That’s an elite winning %.
They’ve got a little breathing room yet.
But not that much.
It’s crazy but yeah, 8 games in, it’s like >80% certain Arizona is out of the playoffs |

A one dimensional shooting winger for our most complete player? (and maybe even most effective for a portion of the season thus far )
No thanks |

While it'd hurt the team's C depth and options overall, how is that ridiculous? |

Seriously? A struggling one dimensional scoring winger that is ufa after next year for RNH??
I think you're just arguing to be an ass. |

Pacioretty is far better defensively than you give him credit for. He'd look like Hossa compared to most of our team's wingers.
Second, framing the trade as a "one dimensional shooting winger for our most complete player" exposes serious bias. It could JUST as easily be framed as "a consistent 30+ goal scoring two-way winger for a 45-55 point 2C". There are completely valid arguments against this including Pacioretty's upcoming UFA status (next season) without resorting to something like you have.
He's been a consistent 30 goal scorer despite playing with minimal talent and is precisely the type of player that we need. While we would be giving up flexibility in our C depth, a player doing what Nuge does can be found more easily than a player doing what Pacioretty does. Just hit up Vegas midseason once they've started floundering and grab a guy like Karlsson, Eakin or Haula and you've got Nuge-lite.
Beyond that, we also are on the borderline of being able to afford Nuge's cap hit at all. While I'd sooner move Lucic, I get the feeling that isn't gonna happen for a number of reasons. Then who's next on the block? Sekera or Russell and Nuge. I imagine Pacioretty's next contract would bring us back up to around 6mil but we would have an extra year to address those concerns.
Maroon- McDavid- Yamo
Patches- Draisaitl- Strome
Lucic- Karlsson- Slepy
Caggiula- Letestu- Kassian
Hell, maybe he's our Kessel and carries a third line from the wing. |

As I say to HB, you're framing the issue through extreme bias. He's not one-dimensional and even if he was, he's DAMN good at that one dimension. Consistent 30+ goal scorers are rare and valuable assets- certainly more rare and valuable than "mildly effective two-way 2Cs who score around 45-50 points" (framing helps).
Describing a player with his track record as "struggling" only serves to outline the fact that he's a virtual guarantee to break out of this slump of his.
The fact that we already almost have to move Nuge (barring unforeseen changes in Chiarelli's stance toward trading Lucic), then it makes a whole lot more sense to get legitimate and tangible value for him. While I'd certainly prefer a couple young assets in return, we could do a whole lot worse than Pacioretty in a Nuge trade. |

We have traded away all of our scoring wingers. If Nuge had a scoring winger out there with him he would have a lot more points himself. Instead he is tasked to drag around guys like Lucic, Strome etc. Nuge is extremely under rated in my book. Trading Nuge forces Drai to play his own line. And that is still as of yet unproven. He scored what was it 3 even strength goals last year away from McDavid? Nuge is the only guy that has not gotten time with McDavid. Why? Because I think he's shown to be the only one that can do what he does without McDavid.
That trade would be yet another huge huge blunder in my opinion. |

Keeping Yam is a mistake. He's looked ok with McDavid but not great but who doesn't look good with McDavid?. I think Drai helps that line alot more than Yam. Luc on line 3? PC should be fired if that happens. I think that line up misses the playoffs. |
