Auto racing is stupid. My friend has about 90k into his Nova to run low 8's in the quarter mile.

I think about this every time there's a gas problem and we're told to conserve or whatever. How about banning auto racing? how much gas do those clowns use weekly all over the country?

So if you’re Housley today, what is the plan?
Do you take a normal business approach to practice.
Or do you send a signal by having a very tough practice right out of the gate...get the boys to focus on starting the games strong? I.e. You play the way you practice.

Or, have you already had a dis ussipn with your 4 leaders and have them drive the practice with high tempo pace and holding others accountable to follow suit?

And then he went on to say "Legit player" and talked abut NHLers.
- Wetbandit1

People forget one thing about "legit players" in both golf and hockey, or any major sport for that matter: endorsements. Even if they don't have personal contracts, elite junior level and college teams pay for their players' equipment for the most part in both sports. In fact, companies in both sports often pay the programs to use their equipment, and only their equipment as opposed to that of a competitor.

If you are a "legit" professional caliber player who goes through one of the traditional routes to the big leagues (excluding the extremely rare "feel good" story of the guy who everybody wrote off), you stopped paying for your own equipment at age 18 at the latest.

This is a dumb post. You know how many train cars are sitting on tracks all over the country loaded full of crude oil, just waiting for an available refinery? Way too many, that don't justify fuel companies raising the price of gas when we have tropical storms or any natural disaster. I know this because my friend is an engineer for CSX. Not to mention the gas you fill your cars and trucks with have been sitting in cisterns for a year, at least, before they make it to the pumps. Emissions are the real issue here, not consumption.

This

Also to throw some gas on the fire:

Douche said something about $300-$400 sticks

The most expensive stick on the market is $299

The NHL players don't use those sticks, they get custom everything which the good players get paid for the average and grinding players have a budget per player paid for by the team.

Players in the AHL and below use a pro model team stick which costs $55 for the team to purchase. It is basically a mix of the top of the line and the 2nd tier price point that you would find on a retail shelf. It is a little heavier than the top of the line but it is more durable.

Now back to the original post what is more expensive golf or hockey

For a young adult that is working on getting a scholarship or to make the jump to the pros:

It is pretty close both ways.

For a golfer you are not just paying greens fees, you're paying a swing coach up to $100 an hour and real golfers are on the range 5 days a week multiple hours a day.

Hockey players have skating coaches and shooting coaches which cost about $50 an hour with ice time included (I set the rates down at my rink so I know)

The cost alone for either sport is insane.

Equipment wise for a good young prospect

Golf:

$400 for a driver
$250 for a 3 wood
$1000 for irons
$200 for a putter
$175 each for their wedges
$200 bag
$200 golf shoes
$50 dozen balls
$10 tees
$100 outfit

$2760 ish

For a hockey player:

$1000 skates
$300 helmet
$150 shin pads
$175 pants
$150 shoulder pads
$100 elbow pads
$25 jock
$275 stick
$150 gloves
$100 bag

$2,425 ish

When you factor in travel, hotels, plus greens fees/hockey league expense at the end of the day what do you get?

Spending an awful lot of money where less than 1% of the kids playing either sport will get a college scholarship.

A whole bunch of stuff that's spot on.
- Stripes77

The only thing that I would add is that even at the elite kids levels, these programs are getting discounts and subsidies from the equipment manufacturers now as well. The kids (parents) pay the team, and team buys the equipment for them at a discounted price (not extreme, but still less than they would on their own).

AAU Basketball is the same way with sneakers and such.

From personal knowledge I can tell you that "elite" travel volleyball clubs fit this description. My daughter played from the time she was 11 until she was 16. The team is based here in Rochester.

When she was 11 we were already playing tournaments in Baltimore. By the time she was 14 here team was playing in a league in Ohio (the competition is tougher there) so every weekend we were traveling to either Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, or Dayton. "Big" tournaments were in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Altanta. When she was 16, she played tournaments in Minneapolis, Louisville, and Las Vegas.

The coach's travel expenses are all covered by the team, so they don't think twice about scheduling tournaments whereever. They don't book rooms at the Red Roof Inn, its always the Marriott or a Hilton. The club was good - the year she was 14 her team was seeded 2nd going in to the U14 National Championship Tournament (it blows my mind they have those tournaments, much less the seeds). But my daughter stopped growing when she was 16, and now she doesn't even play. So my $35 - 50k for volleyball was pretty much down the drain.

(frank)ing pay to play youth soccer. Good enough to play for elite teams (made the team in tryouts), too poor to afford the cost of playing for elite teams.

The idea of being able to afford to play hockey was laughable for myself and my brother. We got second hand sticks and roller blades and played street hockey with a garbage can...that was it.

You began the war of words my friend. My point was merely that motor sports uses up a ton of gas, for sport. That's it. No politics were meant to be involved in the making of this point. That being said, my son is a Bantam Major travel player, and I spend a bunch of money on hockey.

well let ban boats, and motorcycles while we are at it, what makes you so special? Now you want to tell me what I can use gas for?
Get a clue buddy, just because you dont like it dont make it stupid, you know the majority of the safety features in cars have been developed and tested in racing first.
