Golf vs hockey... You cant be serious. Its not even close.
We are talking kids growing up learning and becoming good enough to make it as a pro. You dont need expensive clubs or balls or membership to learn how to hit the middle of the club face and shape shots. Clubs, a few bucks used. I used to walk the woods at th course and find a hundred ballsa day. Membership at a muni course for a kid, $200 per year. In golf there are no politics involved (which was brought up before) if you go shoot 65 every day you will be on the pga tour no matter how you get it done. There is zero ambiguity or opinion involved.... Show me the scorecard and thats all that matters.
Hockey has so much politics involved its ridiculous. And To play against top competetion to the point where you get noticed without politics is unbelieveably expensive. How this even became a point of contention is beyond me. This is angument you cannot win if you think golf is anywher near as expensive as hockey in any sense of the word.

Try me. I can play devils advocate with the best of them... But dont even need to in this case. Between gas, ice time, and a hotel room you could spend more in one weekend taking your kid to play hockey that i could in a whole year having my kid play golf.

Ok, every club in my bag is over 15 years old, stock standard lie and loft through the set. I can hit it high, low, left to right, rigt to left and play in the wind. Membership this year was $429. You can take your new every year high dollar crap and i wil roll you over and make you want to quit with a used pinnacle and im 150lbs soaking wet after a steak dinner. I made more dough in the last two weeks playing golf than it cost me to play for the last two years. Call my bluff? I press, and press again, and again every hole til the sun goes down. if we are talking adults of course.

This is such a poor rhetoric, come on now. A bunch of if's and really, I can say with absolute certainty that my wrist shot alone could have gotten me in the NHL. I'm sure there's plenty of us on here who've played hockey and have our own skills and strengths; And had our parents been able to afford to invest in what is the literal most expensive sport on the planet, who knows what kind of creativity could have happened to the league if they didn't push brutish thugs through a complicated and corrupt system that revolves around a lot of money, a lot of jobs, a lot of industry and a lot of investment in the "rare" superstar and what amounts to a league full of brain-dead idiots who are told to run these guys over and end up playing professional hockey because their affluent parents could afford to invest in a mule that gets paid millions of dollars to suck at his job.

If we're talking legit players. A set of clubs is easily $10K+ plus and you're going to need a new set every 2 or 3 years, greens fees for 5 or 6 days a week, plus a ball for every hole, you can't drive a scuffed ball and hope to learn anything, plus travel.

But when you're a legit hockey player or golfer most, if not all of that poop is paid for. In fact they probably pay you.

- Wetbandit1

nope. he didnt, you did. right here. and thats after you responded to his original post, that i just quoted, and said simply "golf". try a third time.

Nice Try.

Excluding extreme, obscure or racing... keeping it mostly to team sports but still, I think Hockey is more expensive over a career to maintain than Golf.

A set of clubs is expensive but come on.

Helmet, shoulder and chest pads, elbow pads, gloves, jock-strap, cup, girdle, shin and knee pads, skates, stick for a legit hockey player, not a joe schmo buying the cheapest stuff at Richard's Sporting Goods, but an amatuer, semi-professional or professional hockey player, you're looking at close to 10k, if not more. Goalies probably double that.

About 15-20 sticks per season at 300-400 a pop doesn't run cheap, either.

Factor in upkeep, facility fees, team fees and travel x amount of games played, I don't even think it's close. And Der Kaiser is right with his post, actually.

So in being proven wrong that I was the one to bring it up you just stick your fingers in your ears and say "you're wrong lalalalalalalalala." Awesome. And you're the one who brought politics into it. Not me.

I said golf is more expensive than hockey. I said nothing about politics. Didn't mention it once. Try and actually read what I write if you're going to try and pick me apart.

The bottom line is they are both stupidly expensive to play. Top Gear(the good one) did an episode on if you could do rallycross for the same amount it costs to golf. The answer is yes. Auto racing and golf cost about the same.

No way.

A good used motor to use at Holland, Lancaster or the Erie circuit is 10-18k. That's just the motor. Just to start off and be competitive you're 50-75k in and you better hope you can get sponsors to help you out or it's all on you. The days of throwing a car together for 5k and run it for the season are long gone. Tires are a grand every to every other week alone.

It's amazing how some people are so clueless as to how much certain sports cost.

NASCAR is probably in the hundreds of millions each year on tires alone.
