Give them some credit, Marner and Nylander were not "sure bets". Case and point, other players were picked before them.

Sure they got the first overall at the right time which helped them tremendously.

As a case of a full rebuild that went well and fast, they're a pretty good god damn example.

My point is that if they lost the Matthews Lottery (similar to Buffalo losing on McJesus) we'd be looking at a team with Laine or lower picked players. I don't think Laine on this team does what Matthews does for them. They'd be better than they were... but not this far ahead in the rebuild.
