The coach also couldn't possibly trust MacDonald to play in that spot either. He makes a lot of mistakes so the coach is trying to hide him for 20 minutes a game on the top pairing so Provorov can cover up all his mistakes.

I've watched it plenty of times. I don't need to watch it again. The play is designed to draw the defender over to create an opening on the weak side. Manning made the right read. I guess you think that Oshie would lose the ability to skate once receiving that outlet. We want our defenseman to keep a tight gap and challenge in the neutral zone. Well except when a goal is scored. Defense is a team game. Much easier to blame the scapegoat on the ice.

On the other goal however MacDonald shouldn't have shadowed Ovechkin. If he had left him alone and dropped back down and Ovechkin ripped a goal into the net. "Why in the hell did MacDonald let Ovechkin go!"

Gudas and Filppula were over towards the boards. They wouldn't have been able to get to Oshie just as they weren't able to get to Backstrom. If Manning wouldn't have marked Oshie in the neutral zone he would have had the whole middle of the ice open and easy entry right up the gut with the puck to the net. Weal was beside Backstrom in the Caps zone, got caught puck watching and was beat all the way to the net due to not being aware. Weal is the culprit on the play, not Manning.

Undefeated with Manning in there. Convert him to wing.
