That's not correct in my opinion. If Manning doesn't take Oshie he can take that pass and go right down the gut on a breakaway. The weak side is the responsibility of the forwards. Defenseman have to keep a tight gap and spacing to their partner. Manning did what he did because that is his responsibility on the breakout. The entire breakout stretch play the Cap ran is designed to take advantage of the weak side by overloading one side and streaking a forward down the off wing. It's a set play that is ran countless times by NHL teams.

Missed the point
- StepfordSam

Your whole point was based on Sanheim only playing half the games so far.

Why you chose to mention Vandevelde again makes no sense since the extra year in AHL looks to have done wonders for the two 22 year olds that replaced him and PEB.

Well, neither Ghost or Hagg have to drag AMacs butt up and down the ice.
Here's a thought. Perhaps Hak has Provey and A Mac together because Provey is the only one on the team that can cover up AMacs miscues. He isn't there to cover for Provey, it's the other was around.

AMac hasn't been bad this season, he's just miscast. Right now, especially with the way Gudas has played, there's really no good match for Provy. As the season goes along, maybe Hagg can partner with him. If you put Amac on the 3rd pair with better matchups, he'll be fine.

I'm just wondering what has to change in order for the coach to increase his playing rate, which could be at 50% after tonight. I'm aware of the small sample size.

Also the VdV issue is relevant. It speaks to the judgment of the coach in regards to player personnel.

If Sanheim isn't going to play, he needs to be sent down. I agree with you there.

I just don't see why you put Provy and Hagg together. To me they would be better used split. Be it with Provy/AMac and Hagg/Ghost or Provy/AMac-Gudas, Morin/Ghost and Hagg/Sanheim later in the year after they figure out the vet who leaves to get Sanheim and Morin full time playing in the NHL.

If I had it my way, I'd do Provy-Sanehim, Hagg-Gudas/AMac, Morin-Ghost. But there's no way that's happening (going with 3 rookies and only 1 "vet"), so Hagg would be my pick this year. To me, he's a great complimentary guy.

Based on Giroux's last game, he should score 308 more points this season.

Wow, who was the forward wearing #51 who was at center ice that is behind Manning? Seems like he could have easily picked up the player who received the pass at center.

Also, Jordan Weal should have been playing all of last year. Dude has skills.

Is this the same Bob Boughner that used to play D for the Sabres back in the heated rivalry days?!?!?

No he wasn't. He was correctly covering Oshie who was working horizontally across the ice. If he doesn't cover Oshie, he takes that pass and has a breakaway. The Caps ran a set breakout stretch play that NHL teams have been running forever. The forward, I believe it was Weal did not recognize the play and got caught flat footed and beaten on the weak side by Backstrom. Oshie made a phenomenal tip pass.

you might want to watch the goal again. Manning was cutting to Gudas side of the ice, in center ice, the puck was lobbed over everyone and it ended up to be a clean break away on mannings D side. Not saying Weal couldnt help, but Manning had no business leaving it that wide open, not many people score from center ice.

that said, every D makes a mistake every game, that was a big one.

Or perhaps the coach has MacDonald playing there because right now he feels he is the best choice to partner with Provorov. Honestly think about what you're insinuating.

I've watched it plenty of times. I don't need to watch it again. The play is designed to draw the defender over to create an opening on the weak side. Manning made the right read. I guess you think that Oshie would lose the ability to skate once receiving that outlet. We want our defenseman to keep a tight gap and challenge in the neutral zone. Well except when a goal is scored. Defense is a team game. Much easier to blame the scapegoat on the ice.

On the other goal however MacDonald shouldn't have shadowed Ovechkin. If he had left him alone and dropped back down and Ovechkin ripped a goal into the net. "Why in the hell did MacDonald let Ovechkin go!"
