Yes and no. There are at least six players on this roster I wish wasn't here.

That may change a bit once the final roster is set

just sayin...

All kidding aside, I doubt few, if any, NHL teams and more so their fan bases, are thrilled with all 22 or 23 guys on the roster. It's the nature of the beast.

To me Patrick looks NHL ready. Remember that neither Stamkos or Tavares walked into the NHL dominating and that would be the tier to hope for, even that's putting expectations a little high. However he needs to improve that first step before he's relied on as an impact player in the NHL.

I'm not going to get into the labels associated with line ups. Couturier just needs to be put in a position to play a ton of quality minutes because he's a hell of a hockey player.

- Baxter27

Based on his play its not even a thought to send him back to juniors.

Love guys on YouTube telling me that hard, clean hits like the Morin one require a fight because that's considered "taking liberties." ffs
- jmatchett383

That infuriates me. What has happened to the game that a clean hit is a livery.

Biggest concern with Patrick is his acceleration. He's shown the skill and smarts but skating is holding him back from really asserting himself in a game. I also think it will get him burned a lot if he's tasked with checking the league's best players.

I agree with moving Giroux to the right side because he's looked at his best when attacking from it but downgrading the quality of his line mates is counter productive.

- Baxter27

Was happy to be able to watch the whole game last game and really watch the team closely. I'll watch again tonight but I agree with Patrick. It might be that he has to develop a better stride but it could also be that he's still getting back to where he was before surgery. He's an nhler imo.

Morin is a lock. I like what sanheim has shown and I really hope he and hagg make the squad over amac with manning as the 7. This is based on merit in their play so far imo.

Weise and Filppula I feel we're two avoidable acquired players.

I believe Bill touched on Patrick's first stride and despite being 100% healthy it's still difficult to gain that first stride back after his injuries/surgeries. I could be wrong. But I briefly remember Bill making a comment about his first stride

Filppula is solid. He's still among the top 6 forwards on the team even if he centers a "third" line. Weise looked good late last year and looks good so far. The cap hits are what they are but the Flyers aren't in a cap crunch so I don't care about that value.

I personally think that Filppula is going to be a big part of the team this year. He may not put up a metric poop ton of points, but he's a decent middle-six player.

Weise was a miss, but far from the worst contract on the league.

I'm assuming Hextall will keep Patrick on the opening day roster but I feel it would be in his best interest if he was returned to the Juniors.

He doesn't look NHL ready. He hasn't stood out in any of the games. Perhaps because of his rehab he is missing a strong first step and a third gear. But I want to see more from the 2nd overall pick, not just a player who does the little things well. I want my 2nd overall pick to do the big things well also. If he was the 22nd pick I'd doubt there'd be a discussion.

Courterier is a third line center on a serious SC contender. Move him around all you want. Sorry. He tried. He is what he is. Accept it.

- 77rams

I have to strongly disagree here. In my opinion, Patrick is absolutely NHL ready. His skating is not as strong as it will be once he gets in better game skating shape and gets stronger but his play away from the puck and his hockey sense is NHL caliber.

I also think you're wrong about Couturier. He can fill a 2nd line center role on a serious contender.

And whose roster spots are they taking? Leier is the only AHL forward really pressing to make the team this year, and they can make room for him by waiving Read.

Next season there will be at least two open spots for guys like Vecchione and Vorobyev:

Giroux
Voracek
Lehtera
Couturier
Simmonds
Weise
Raffl
Weal
Laughton
Patrick
Lindblom
Konecny

Doesnt mean Leier plays though. I don't think it is a huge issue, but I do look at the roster and see 1 forward too many

I'm not worried if Leier makes the roster but doesn't play right away. The top 12 forwards will never stay healthy all season, so as long as a guy is on the roster he'll play enough. Even Lyubimov managed 47 games last year.

The thing is "being ready" is virtually meaningless. I can imagine exceptions but not on this Flyers team. The kids all seem to be on the verge of winning roster spots on merit. They are better players than the guys they're competing against today.

Exactly. Filppula I really like. He filled a hole last year they were desperate to fill and the team played much better after he got here. They were hard up for quality forwards and still are to an extent.

Perhaps. But Vecchione could be called up too. Anyway, largely a non-issue, but I wouldn't mind if they traded a forward one bit

Better to trade than to waive, definitely.

I don't have a clue how good Vecchione actually is, so it'll be nice to finally see how he does in meaningful games against professionals. It kind of seems like he's starting off behind the four years younger Vorobyev on the organizational depth chart, though.

It's not about fighting Morin because it was cheap (which it wasn't), it's about fighting for your teammate. You really think Farnham went after Morin in a fit of rage because of a cheap shot? You really think NHL players who have played this game for all but 3 years of their lives don't allow hitting anymore or understand what's dirty and what isn't?

If my teammate gets leveled, I'll jump in and fight the guy not because he threw a chicken wing elbow, but because he's my teammate and that's what I feel obliged to do.

I remember I got trucked, completely clean, and my buddy jumped in on the guy. I was fine, popped right up, but that's the poop that builds a cohesive team. You remember that and soon, you're not playing hockey with a bunch of hockey players, you're playing with your family, for lack of a better clichè. That's important to winning.

I would put Vecchione in the "better than PEB" category, obviously without all the "intangibles" I see him pretty similar to Matt Read, and though he may not score 20 goals, I don't think he would look out of place in the NHL.

Vorobyev has progressed rapidly. He has shown vision and offensive awareness that I never really saw when they first drafted him. He may not be above Vecchione on an depth chart yet, but I imagine it won't be long. Vecchione has the age advantage and played cawlidge hawkey

What ever happened to just hitting someone else though? Stopping the game to fight someone after every hit is stupid, and it doesn't prevent a guy from getting hit in the first place. You think a guy is gonna pull up so he doesn't have to fight someone?

Don't tell me hitting one of their guys or scoring a goal against the guy that leveled your teammate wouldn't feel better or build cohesion, BUDDEH
