Do you remember how much you paid for those Tacks new? They were the premium skate for a long time and I think the competitor skate on the market was Bauer Supremes.

IIRC Rick, it was around 1971 when I was able to cajole my Dad into the Tacks (it was one of those "need to know you're serious about hockey" conversations) and I swear they were something like $200 at the time. I don't even want to know what that amount would be in today's $ but certainly (I think) a lot more than the ~$800 for top-of-line skates today.

As for the Supremes, I think you are right. I got Tacks because those were what the pros I followed were using.

They would also keep a full house next door of hockey sticks - mainly Victoriavilles - wood with a straight blade. Remember buying one for $3.99 and my old man went a little silly, said it better last the entire season. I could of had a CCM for $2.50. Those were the days of my youth Savvy.

Ah yes, good times Rick. I loved the old Northlands and then Sherwoods. I have 2 brand new Torspo sticks in my basement. They were/all are a far cry from the 1 piece technology today. And a helluva lot more brittle and expensive. Wonder what your pop would say if you were asking to buy a $250+ CCM/Sherwood/Bauer today?!

I think unless they plan on Hayden to move to line 2, ADB will make this team. The guy is electric and the Hawks are going to have to somewhat follow the Pens model, by overcoming suspect Defense with waves of elite forwards dominating puck possession. Players like Jurco (who after a nice first game has not impressed), Bouma, and Tutu fail in that model. A fourth line that includes Hino and/or Hayden with Kero could not only be a good defensive line, but they should be a real threat to score. Much as I like Kampf I think he goes down to the Rock.

I don't want to compare him to Kane but ADB has a very similar skillset with a better shot at the same age. He can create space for himself. Granted it is only the preseason.

I also don't see his skating as a big issue. He obviously does not have the kind of feet Kane has but few do. Let us not forget that prior to the 2nd cup run, Kane could easily be taken out of games if things got physical and he could be moved off the puck. He really did not start to put some muscle on his frame until around 2013.

Going totally on memory here but I seem to recall going into Kenesky's and a cheap CCM skate entry level was $14.99 and the next level up was $29.99 and the Tacks were either $85.00 or $99.00.

My dad said the $14.99 skate was good enough because I couldn't skate worth a crap anyway. At that point my mother stepped in and insisted he buy me the $29.99 skate. They got sharpened so many times there was virtually no blade left at the end.

And by comparison I remember buying my daughter a $400 driver when she was a teenager playing competitive amateur golf. Inflation!

I think that can be true for both good and bad things, though.

Ain't that the truth. I'ts been 4 pre-season games and people are ready to claim the guy is worthless. He's on a new team playing top minutes with a new partner and a new system... Oh, and he's 24 years old. He'll be fine. I bet midway through the season nobody thinks he's garbage.

What has happened to Wingels? I remember him having some wheels. He looked a step slow most of the night. I loved him on the Sharks as a bottom 6 guy. Pretty meh now.

He is also a big boy. He is not going to look as graceful as the smaller defenders we are used to seeing on the Hawks. For being a big man Seabs is extremely smooth on his skates. Most big guys are going to look more awkward. I think Murphy will be fine.

He fractured his foot in the off season, and while he's healed now, he's probably not at his best.

And yeah, no one wanted to lose Hjammer after 2010, but the time period I'm talking about was just after that - sophomore year and such. There was a lot of female doging and moaning about how inconsistencies, especially into the early half of 2012 (though how valid they were is another story). I think anyone with a brain knew Hjammer was going to even out and be great, but sports fans are often irrational with their in-the-moment hot-takes.
- L_B_R

Quoting myself because I just wanted to show what I was remembering from 2011-2012 about Hjammer. Below is a link to a CI article that showcases the type of complaints from that time period. Articles like that (and the others linked in it) were not outside the norm during this time cause TCI and SCH both had some just like it.

These are my lines as of now:

Saad-Toews-Panik
DeBrincat-Schmaltz-Kane
Sharp-Anisimov-Hayden
Hinostoza-Kero-Hartman
13th forward should be between Wingles and Dauphin

- SimpleJack

I like it

I could handle switching DeBrincat and Hayden but these look the best 12 from what I have seen

NHL teams must submit their cap-compliant opening night rosters by 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The NHL's waiver wire will be extremely busy through the weekend as a result.
