leon Draisaitl will be better than Matthews once he gets his own permanent line & linemates!
- Aussiepenguin

Oh yeah him, Draisaitl, the guy who scored 60 points in his first 109 NHL games playing mostly with McDavid. Sure, well researched.

Notice the part at the end about being 200ft player.

I saw that, my point still stands.

The Jets gave up 256 GA last year, they were near the bottom of the league, so were the Leafs, Scheifele was still +18 and put up 80+ points. Like I said, IMO he's currently better than Matthews.

A truly ridiculous comparison. Scheifele took two seasons in the minors to make the NHL, in his rookie season he managed 34 points, 13 goals in 63 games. We are comparing a Hyundai to Ferrari here.
- winsix

You're muddying the waters, I said "currently" in response to 'whats his name' saying there's an argument for him currently being the best player in the league.

if he has another great year, I'll change my opinion and move him up the ladder. He's one of the best young players in the league but there's some players who I think are better. 15 of them...
- LeftCoaster

Why dies Matthews need to have another big year to jump ahead, but you have scheifle ahead of him (ludicrous)

So many times there's a loose puck in the offensive zone, coming up the boards towards the blue line, where the other team has a chance to clear it, and Matthews is just so good at grabbing it and turning the play back onto the attack, with no space. Kid can calmly stick handle through traffic like a madman.

Wait till he gets his own line & we'll see.

Also, if Matthews went to the Oil when Draisaitl did who knows what would have happened.

No research here, it's an opinion!

At the end of every year you form an opinion on the players for that year, that's how it works.

69 points says he need to get better to be compared to the very topend players.

I was reading an interview with Ferraro a while ago, and he said his brother-in-law who had been coaching Matthews with the US program, before the draft he had been saying to Ferraro 'I've got a kid who's as good as Crosby, the next Crosby'.

Well he should retire now & go directly in the HOF. What do you think? Apparently he is the best all round player in the NHL after his first year. HOF?

Sid scored close to 100 in his first year I think from memory. What does that mean?

Wait wait wait..... So we base this on one year, then say Matthews needs to show it Agian? Isn't that a contradiction? Scheifle is ahead because of one year, but Matthews needs to do it again to prove he belongs there? come on

Yeah cause he played way less mins/game others. His pts/60 holds up well against the others.

Not at all, Scheifele averaged over 20 minutes of ice time per game last year. Played with two veteran scoring forwards Matthews averaged 3 minutes less per game played with rookies and outscored guys like Ovechkin. Maybe Boeser should be ahead of him in your opinion. I guess you can't include McDavid as a top player either, he only managed 48 points in his rookie campaign.

No, it's not. We're talking about the "current" best players in the league. That opinion was formed on last season.

You guys make it sound like I'm trashing the kid, I'm totally not, he's great! I just don't think he could currently be considered the best in the league, as your boy Hockey_Reverend said.

Kevin Paul Dupont @GlobeKPD
I was unaware the NHL had a faceoff problem until it presented a fix that is a bigger problem than the problem I was unaware existed.

Sid actually scored 102 points rookie year. How many did Matthews score again?

Then in his 2nd year scored 120.

Now, that's a champion players stats if we are going on points.

Matthews has a long way to go. A looooong waaaaaay to go..........

But Hof, yes. Let's get the votes going here on the Buzz. Austin in the hall!

I get it, you love the kid...I don't blame you. All things considered, it's my opinion he's a great young player, but he's not currently at the top of the league.

Hall of Fame. It's decided on here in the Leafs thread.

Austin Matthews belongs in the Hall of Fame after his 1st & only season.

You said matthews has to show it again to show he belongs, but you then say that it's based on last season. How do you not see the contradiction there? If we are basing off last year then how in the he'll isnt the 2nd leading goal scorer and leading even strength scorer not considered higher?
