He will need 2 seasons in the AHL before he is even close to ready. He can't play in the AHL next year either so I expect we see him in a Canuck jersey for a long time.

Pretty sure that's as much on the Sekera, Lucic (especially given his similar role) and even the Nuge deals as it is on the Russell deal. I get that it's your belief that Russell is far less worthy of his contract than those two, but this was a foregone conclusion the moment we got McDavid. One way or another, this team would have a harder time retaining mid-tier talent. It didn't help but it's not directly responsible.

As for upgrading on defense, I don't know that that's entirely necessary. While my personal belief is that a 3 year deal would've been FAR better, the extra deal is manageable. He was a zero-cost placeholder to take on tougher minutes for the next year or two until Nurse and Benning is fully prepared to usurp him and Sekera.

The way I see it, we were looking at stomaching this contract, dealing our future for Hamonic or signing a far less proven and perhaps less effective veteran to fill the gap. As a result of Sekera's expected absence, I don't believe that last one was an option worth considering.

I think there's any number of comparable dmen that coulda been had for much less term. I believe chiarelli got spooked when sekera went down and didnt wanna derail any forward progress and got suckered into giving him too much money and way too much term. Because he was convinced Russel is a bigger part of our success than he really was.
Shoulda been 2 years max. He's gonna be an absolute liability beyond that

If Khaira continues his decency dues, along with JJ continuing to do well, we could possibly see Maroon gone for some picks (maybe 2nd and a 3rd?). Thing is, Chia is actually considering to extend him and knowing him, the price is gonna be high. If it's over 3m per for 3y+, well, crap.

I would love Chia to adopt a strategy similar to Sather's but we all know that ain't happening.
