Who's the best Russian player of all-time?
It's Malkin but I just want to see what people in another country say... - LeftCoaster
Tretiak
Kharlamov*
Mogilny
Bure
Kharlamov gets an asterisk because he died young and was a shrimp. He probably would have had difficulty in the 70's era of the NHL which was rough. Was a great international star. Tretiak imo would have been a great NHL goal, he's in the top five goalies ever for me.

Kharlamov also had a bad ankle -not sure how that happened.
Bure and Mogilny were too one-dimensional to be considered GOAT. |

Tretiak was my vote.
Had the russians left Tretiak in against the US, the miracle on ice would have never happened.
Dumb move by the russians |

Old dirty rat Clarkie, yes - a fine example of why he may have had a hard time in the NHL - against those dirty Flyers, Bruins etc. in that era.
Russians had their dirty little bag of tricks too though. Remember the kicking in the back of the legs with the point of the skate? That was nasty.

On the bright side, it may expedite a trade for a quality defender once we see just how bad things are. |

our PK wasn't bad either last year.
so yeah, any uptick in penalties could help us
but only since our defense kinda sucks 5v5. |

Or maybe intentional move by the Russians.
There is a conspiracy theory out there that the USSR purposely tanked the hockey competition, in hopes that Olympic fever would grip the US, and they would back down from boycotting the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
When you look at the poop that went down in that game, it's not the hardest thing to believe. |

You bring up an interesting point. Bure, Mogilny and Malkin are probably the highest point producers per game - I did not include Malkin, although he should be up there I suppose, but feel he has benefited greatly from playing with Crosby. When you say one-dimensional, is that Bure and Mogilny were not defensively responsible? You can say that Fedorov and Datsuyk were more responsible defensively, but is that the player? the team? or the system?

Oh, Sixie, you've triggered me.
Bure and Mogilny did one thing, and one thing only - they tried to score goals. They didn't give two poops about preventing goals.
This may sound like ole' Wedgie is ragging on them, but the truth is, that was exactly what they were taught to do.
Canadian hockey demands that wingers play a two-way game. We are the only hockey nation on earth that does this.
As a result, Canadians don't produce good wingers. We simply don't.
If you think I'm crazy, look at the last 40 years of HHOF inductees - I'd be willing to bet that 80% of the Canadian forwards elected were centres, not wingers.
Or look at any Team Canada lineup - most of our wingers are centres who we move over for the tournament. |
