Just trying to clarify waivers, someone correct me if I'm wrong (like nobody would). Kero, Hartman, Jurco would have to clear waivers if they don't make the team because they were up at the end of last season. Whereas Polka, Baun, Glass, Svedberg and Oesterle wouldn't if they don't make the team because they were in the AHL at end of last season.

All of those guys would have to pass through waivers because they've hit the max numbers of games played based on the player's age and/or the number of years since he signed his first NHL contract. Status of where they ended the previous season has no bearing on waiver eligibility - remember that McNeill had to clear waivers last season after camp even though he was in Rockford the year before.

Guys that are exempt that are either locks or are in serious contention for a roster spot are: Schmaltz, Forsling, and Rutta. Any prospect who hasn't played (Debrincat, Fortin, etc) are obvs exempt as well.

I know Cat is only 5"7 but isn't he pretty scrappy for his size?

May be only one scraper on a line with ADB?
Whom?
Not Panic away from line #2
Hartman I prefer on line #3
Would prefer a big tough SOB
Too bad Clark Gillies isn't playing!

Why is everyone already writing off fortin and the rest of the guy in camp?????
Iacopelli/Louis/Gus/oesterle/snuggerud

Perhaps Fortin is sort of like the saying goes...out of sight, out of mind.....more just because there are many prospects the focus of attention.

Fortin had the surgery so probably just holding back a bit longer than others. He plays then we'll talk about him. The other guys are not ready at all. I do not know exactly how good is Oesterle. He plays both sides but Edmonton wasn't chasing hard to retain him.

Snuggerud needs probably most or at least half a season to learn and practice playing defense in the AhL. Louis and Iocopelli are opposites and both need to prove they can light up AHL before NHL cup of coffee.

I agree with the blog about Gus being close but still has issue not engaging rather backing away physical confrontations.

You will be cursed on these boards for even having such a thought ,

But...... John Hayden may add such an element down the road......Remember Billy Guerin?

Running guys is great. But can he throw em? Need an element of both to do what you're suggesting.

No sensible coach would use ADB full time on a line with two more small non physical guys ...no, not full time that line.....talk about NHL indoctrination.....teams would be planning much in advance of running a guy on that line each chance

There is a reason why generally speaking time immemorial coaches prefer to have contrasting style with at least one mate on a forward line and with the defense pairings. Now often the ideal combinations cannot be achieved for various reasons.

But you don't want the rookie looking over his shoulder constantly. Too much pressure. Teams will take a run at new, talented guys anyway...but they are absolutely licking their chops to get after any of those on a Smurf line.

Sure, I admit for a few shifts such a line can be trotted out there, but not a regular turn each game. Concussions would be forthcoming.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hayden on the 2nd line. The one thing you can't teach is size and he certainly has that. Hopefully his skating and skill set keep improving so Q could play him with Kane if he wants a big body playing on that line.
