It's basically a cap dump from the Panthers perspective and they get a serviceable depth forward. For Arizona, they get a pretty good Dman back. I see it as a win for the Coyotes.

Exactly how I see it. McGinn is a dime a dozen while Demers is a pretty decent dman and for what he brings is probably paid accordingly based on recent signings. I really like Demers and is a great addition for the Yotes. Florida on the other hand is going nowhere.

Yet another good move by Chayka. Shores up the defense and opens playing time for a young kid, possibly. I realize that Tanner stated he had the 2nd least amount of ice time, but that ice time is going to someone else. We'll see how this team looks on Sept. 25th when they play the Ducks here in Tucson.

You're like a child "nah nah nah nah nah nah, my dad is better than yours is." This trade is not earth shattering at all. Demers is not a make the playoffs player.

Maybe not, but when you package the defense as a whole, he may make that difference. The team as a whole comes down to coaching chemistry and talent. If it all comes together as a group, then yes, one player can make a difference. Maybe not on the scoresheet, but intangibles. Not earth shattering but another step in the right direction.

No one in Florida is going "Oh no we lost Jason Demers!" Many are happy just to see him gone no matter what the return.

No rational person in existence would prefer Demers on their team over Adam Larsson.

Many consider Demers a #4/5 guy at best and a #7 at worst. He certainly can move the puck it's unfortunate that he can't reliably play defense.

Having said that the move itself is solid for Chayka just as long as he doesn't expect too much from Demers.

Jason Demers is a better hockey player than Adam Larsson.

OEL, Jammer, Demers, Goligoski is a solid top 4.

Last year, on the worst team in the NHL (stats-wise, if not results-wise) McGinn averaged 12 minutes per night and was the 4th least used skater, and two of the guys below him played 40 and 46 games respectively.

So basically, McGinn is Coyotes second least used player, who is somehow paid $3.3 million, with two years left.

That's a TON of money to pay a 4th liner. In the article I called him a third liner, so I think I might have been being generous.

But his coach was stupid and didn't have a clue?

One must wonder if this has anything to do with the Bolland trade?

Tanner is the desert version of Garth. Rose coloured glasses. Stepan is not nor will ever be a #1 C
- BernardShakey

He did mention him as a 2nd tier #1 C.

They're a weird team that's hard to really get a grasp of where they are.

I think they could contend for a wild card spot if things go right for them.

Barkov is a stud but he's always injured.

- david22

The identity they were building with Tallon seemed to of fizzled out when he stepped down. Now he's gotta female dog slap it back into that team.

There were stupid things that Tippett did (giving tons of PP time to a pair of 36 year old vets during a rebuilding season springs to mind) but not playing McGinn very much doesn't count as one of them.

Where is the logic in that? Maybe the Leafs couldn't fit him in under the cap, the Panthers didn't want Bozak, the Leafs want to have room for their young players, or Lou discounts the analytics that say Demers is so good, or the Panthers didn't let other teams know this was going on............

,,,,,,,,,there are a ton of reasons why the Leafs didn't pay more to make this happen that don't require you to make a nonsensical leap like 'since the Leafs didn't pay more he's not good.'

When they first moved Tallon away from the GM job, it was one of the franchises all time best moves. Unfortunately when they didn't see instant success from their new direction (despite being absolutely hammered with injuries) they bailed on it because they are cowards who couldn't take the heat.

Now they've given Tallon back the reigns and it's the disaster I always said it would be.

But it was a working machine when he stepped down. Then it went to poop. Just saying. He does make things work.

Injuries derailed them more than any mismanagement did, but now he's in charge again and seems to be making alot of changes for seemingly no reason.

Or he's not as good as you think he is....

Could be a various reasons as to what happened....but I like your version the best...Tallon's a moron and so are most Ex Nhl players.

Now, I know full well that stats are "stupid" and that I don't "understand the game" while in point of fact Dale Tallon is a "hockey guy" but these are some pretty extreme differences.

If anything, Jason Demers is better than I've given him credit for, since I've called him a good second pairing player, when in fact, he'd probably be a decent #2 on a top pairing.

I tell you one thing, there is no chance I'm overrating him - he's really, really good. And if we're going to make weird assumptions based on what we think NHL GMs think, then I think it's safer to go with the NHL's best GM (Chayka) rather than a guy competing hard to be it's worst (Tallon).
