For all of Sanheim's drool-inducing skills, it seems like he needs time in LHV.
For all of Myers' drool-inducing skills, it seems like he needs time in LHV AND some injury luck.
I feel like Sanheim isn't making the team this year but definitely will next year.
Can Myers even stay healthy enough to develop? - johndewar
I'm fine with Sanheim in the AHL again this year at least to start. Look at what 2 yrs in the AHL did for Morin and even Hagg. and I think its crazy to even think Myers was ready. I am all in favor of letting the kids work on their game in the AHL. Provorov was a special circumstance. Kid is special. |

Can I just say I was left looking for answers when fighting majors were given out to both players when Morin didn't have his gloves off nor did he throw a punch. The other guy has his gloves off and threw 3 punches to the back of Morin's head.
what. - Giroux_Is_God
That was based on rep. If Morin wanted to (frank) that guy up, he could have. I mean, really, he bodyslammed that guy and his hands were free. He could have ended that dude's life, but I think the other dude was looking to make a name at Sam's expense.
He looked like a guy that was legitimately trying to display his hockey skills and he did.
He was physical within the rules, made nice outlet passes, used his size, etc.
He was everything we hoped for, really. |

Woot woot! Hockey stuff happening again!
Took me three tries to remember my HB password, but here I am in the door! Go Flyers !
How we lookin' this year? Leclair's back still bad? How is Lindros' head? Carter still shooting wide? What about Gagne, he seemed to be losing a step last time I saw him, and christ, I hope Forsberg's ankles are on the mend! |

It is unfortunate that the sample size for Sanheim to make the team is small. His skills are many.
However, he made as many mistakes during that dopey rookie game than he did good poop. Honestly, if he was ready for the NHL, he should have dominated that poop.
He didn't. Actually, I thought he was just OK.
Morin, OTOH, during that game looked steady. He could have fought half the Isles rookies team, but didn't. That hug fest he had doesn't count. He looked like he knew what he was doing at every step of the way. - johndewar
He dominated the AHL much of the 2nd half. He was mediocre today. But besides that Barzal goal, which goalie played poorly too, he actually had a strong finish to the game and was playing more active in the 3rd. He's in a tough spot. Even if he looks great from here on out, he's probably headed to LHV. That writing was already on the wall.
He was fine during the prospects game, if not particularly good. But that was a slop fest, and frankly I don't care much about it. The entire defense was shades of /shrug minus Friedman. Morin used his body and the crowd went nuts, but he was butchering the puck that game and even admitted it. Besides hitting people, he wasn't that hot himself IMO. Game had zero structure. Today I'd say he was pretty steady. Also benefitted from playing with Ghost.
We already have seen Sanheim as a pro all last season. I watched a lot of Phantoms games. I think that's the better sample than a loosey goosey prospect exhibition. He looked nervous today, but it's early. Everything I said in my other post stands with him as a gradual level jumper. I don't expect him to make it, but I also don't think he has much else to prove in the AHL just because he was sloppy today. I'm of the opinion that whatever steps he has to make to be an NHLer are probably at the NHL level. Won't hurt him to go back down. I'm just not convinced it actually helps him either. |

I'm not remotely down on Sanheim because of 2 uneven games. I just think Hagg and Morin are ahead of him right now. I fully expect Sanheim to be with the Flyers soon enough. |

If he is sent back to the AHL it wouldn't be because he has to prove anything down there. It would be to fine tune specific areas of his defensive game to make him a better player moving forward. We already have Gostisbehere who is at best adequate defensively. Sanhiem has a chance to be a more well round and a more complete player. Much easier to do that at the AHL level than the NHL level. If he is constantly making mistakes defensively, the coach is not going to have trust in him and it will affect his ice time.

I think that's the Flyers thought the whole time. They have Hagg and Morin who have played in the AHL for 2 and 3 seasons, respectively. There is nothing for each of them to gain in the AHL next season at all.
So, it's not really about Sanheim, but more about Hagg's and Morin's sink and swim moment. They only way Sanheim was going to get one of those two spots was with a dominant preseason, with no slip-ups. In other words, I believe the thought process of the Flyers was, 'If Sanheim shows us he's ready to take on 20+mins at the NHL, then he will make the team; otherwise, he's to the AHL.'

As skilled as Travis Sanheim is, appears he needs more experience before he becomes an NHL defenseman. Leland Irving looks like a career minor league goalie.

Weise, Flip, and Lehtera are just so unnecessary. At least Lehtera was just a cap dump.
Having "unnecessary" guys like that on the roster is why Hextall was comfortable moving on from Bellemare and Cousins and Lyubimov and VdV. In particular Fippula and his NMC is why Bellemare wasn't protected in the expansion draft, and Filppula would be the 3C if the Flyers hadn't won the draft lottery. |

The two Fins are absolutely fine considering that Patrick would be able to help them
to do Brayden Schenns job and if they can help G with face-offs in defensive zone and reduce his workload it would help him as well |

And this is Hextalls thinking. If he is coming up it is probably to play a top 4 role. But he won't bring him up if he doesn't feel he is ready for that. Provorov was physically and mentally ready to be in the NHL at 19. I think Sanheim could use half a season in the AHL to refine his game.
I think Morin and Hagg are both ready for the roles that are going to be expected of them. |

Exactly. They probably don't want to give Sanheim 10 minutes per game at the NHL with spot duty on special teams. Let him go down to the AHL, dominate at all areas, and get called up when he's ready to be a bigger all-situations contributor. |

And I understand Sanheim and Myers have more upside to Morin and maybe Hagg. But Morin and Hagg are ready for the roles the Flyers see them playing. While both guys aren't the sexy types people see in Sanheim and Myers, they are both more ready for the NHL.
And i am thinking Hagg might surprise some people. I really can see him eventually playing with Provorov this season. |

I dont have time to watch the Phantoms, so don't know really what he was like last year minus what I read online. I'll try and catch a few more of the pre-season games if I can but don't have too many hard feelings about sending him and Myers back.
One thing I do agree with, is it may be a little overwhelming for these kids to have only Gudas as the vet. A d-core of Provorov, Ghost, Hagg, Morin, and Sanheim would be fun - but could also be a little scary when the kids are trying to learn/gain confidence.
Obviously want to see the youth contributing asap, but if they need a bit more time... So be it. |

So former Flyers flavor of the minute Tomas Hyka had a Jody Hull-like preseason game yesterday with 2 goals. Dude should absolutely tear up the ECHL this year. |

I am not putting anything into yesterday or Wednesdays games. There is no real reason that a game of mostly kids vs a team that was playing a lot of vets as a thank you to the fans at the old barn is to be used as a measuring stick. Follow that up with split squad games and you can't really tell much. Thursday night starts the preseason in earnest to me. |
