All is good DK, hope you're well too.

Duchene checks a lot of boxes, but that doesn't mean a deal can be struck between the Hawks and Avs. The Hawks finally have some depth in the pipeline and now's not the time to give it up.

Duchene is good, but I wouldn't sell the farm for him, just my opinion.

I don't see Stan acquiring anyone who isn't a UFA at the end of the season. Cap-wise it's just too difficult to commit to cap dollars beyond this season. It's true that the cap should go up and Panarin's bonuses come off the books. But Hartman needs a new contract and Schmaltz does the year after. Also, the Hawks have only 3 defenseman signed beyong this season, not included Oesterle or any of the prospects. That will need to be addressed.

Unless there is salary going the other way like AA, then I could see it. And/or if Hossa's salary gets moved. Then maybe.

Guys....OF COURSE you pull the trigger on that deal for Duchene, a proven NHL allstar.

I can't believe what I'm reading from some of you.... i mean, Forsling and Jurco are barely established NHLers....the others are just prospects.

Duchene, RIGHT NOW, is a very good top 6 forward, and can help on face offs.

We'd be idiots not to make that trade if we had the cap space, but I'd expect the Avs want more. Any trade scenario for Duchene where we aren't losing Hartman or Schmaltz is a HUGE win.

Imagine this top 9:

Saad/Schmaltz-Toews-Panik
Fortin-AA-Kane
Saad/Schmaltz-Duchene-Hartman

That's the type of trade that can put us back in the conversation for the Cup with a dominating, incredibly fast, and nearly unstoppable matchup advantage at forward(which is why the Penguins have been so great these past 2 seasons).

Saad - Toews - Panik
Duchene - AA - Kane (Duchene can take the face offs)

Lurkers opinion incoming:

Hind sights 20/20 and all, but remember when we weren't trading TT+ for drouin a couple years back? Some even scoffing at Dano+?

Maybe JJ remembers what some tabled offers (alleged or not) for him were, but to those not being sold tossing debrincat++ for a much more proven commodity in duchene I'll ask to re-evaluate this team.

I'm going to look at this trade as an example:

Forsling + DeBrincat + Snuggerud + Jurco

The only person I'd have some qualm about moving is forsling, because he can be an impact player as early as this season. Jurco is probably just bottom line, press box fodder. debrincat and snuggerud are highly unlikely to see NHL time this season, and will (at best) split time next season between rockford and chicago.

The core isn't getting younger. Keith can only have so many firmware updates before his cybernetics start showing some slow down. I think if Bowman can make a trade for duchene, an absolutely stellar second line center, without subtacting from the current club he should be fired if he passes on it. Duchene only makes this team better IMO.

I think Schmaltz will be > Duschene very soon, Best I'd do is ADB, Gus and a first for Duschene, but Sakic is likely looking for more. Other option is AA+ headed to Colorado to off set some of the Cap hit, depends how other centers look in camp.

Think of the assets it would take to move Hossa's contract, especially since no team needs to hit the cap floor (they're all there already).

If we think this through, the trade (indirectly) becomes:

1. The assets required to move Hossa's contract
2. Anisimov
3. Picks
4. Prospects

for

1. Duchene

Nobody is arguing the fact that Duchene would fill some voids on the roster, rather the questions is - Is Duchene really worth a high price?

Powers article excerpt:

The second line would be Alex DeBrincat-Nick Schmaltz-Patrick Kane. Quenneville gave the “All-American Line” a go for the first time Sunday and was ecstatic with the results. DeBrincat had looked ordinary the first two days of camp, but his skill level was accentuated by playing alongside two other skilled players. If that continues, DeBrincat will snatch a roster spot.

Good to see the Cat playing up to the other guys level. I'd still be surprised if he played his first season in the NHL at 19 years old, but looks good for his future ability.

At best, Dauphin will be a 25-point 3rd-liner.*

I doubt he ends up that good, though.

Thanks. I waste a lot of my time delving into the reasoning for my posts, rather than just providing the meat-and-potatoes information.

Agreed, it is good to see the kid playing well at least in camp. Don't know if he makes it but stranger things have happened. Either way, I think Q and the staff will make right call based on the available info and situation.

That is probably more than enough for the role he'd likely have. The more important thing will be how well he can defend, win face-offs, bring energy, win battles, etc.

So Ogi, what would you give up for Duchene, or is he a "No Thanks"

Cat is likely on the Day 1 roster and eventually sent down to Rockford in Nov/Dec for a stint and then brought back up in Jan/Feb. Its Q's MO. See Schmaltz last year.

I have similar concerns about him. He'd probably have an initial positive impact on the team, but yeah, when things get tough, he might just quit again. If Stan goes after him, lets hope he does not trade away too much.

Question: who was the absolute worst player in the entire NHL as measured by plus/minus last year? Be careful what you wish for.

I'd trade Debrincat and a Pick/Defense prospect for Duchene. Schmaltz and Hartman are Chicago raised and have both cost-certainty and on-ice production that is greater than the individual contributions of Duchene, IMO. If the Hawks weren't so thin on Center depth, I could see Anisimov + Pick/D Prospect for Duchene. There are no Russians on the team and CO has the massive Rusky Zadorov who Big Art could do Russian things with.... so I think he'd be willing to waive his NTC. Schmaltz has 20G/40A upside while Duchene is more of a 30G/20A type of player at best. I think the 2 years left on his $6mil Cap hit (exact same as Panarin) are why StanBo would not be willing to part with Schmaltz or Hartman who have proven they can play at a high level in the NHL as rookies. If the high level of praise Q gave Schmaltz translates to improvement in the real games, #8 could be a 60+ point player this year.

Duchene had a career year leading the entire league in plus/minus. Oh wait, it was just minus, I guess there wasn't much plus to it. He was on the ice for HOW MANY enemy goals??? WOW!

Center depth of Toews, Duchene, AA (Schmaltz, Kero, Dauphin) would be nice.
Getting rid of Hossa's contract would be nice.
Sending Hossa's contract, Forsling and the 2018 1st round pick would be ok. But that would not be enough. After that you would have to be careful what players / prospect(s) / picks to add.

Hartman - No.
ADB - No (I think you need to see more of him playing against legitimate NHL players before making that decision.)
Schmaltz - Possibly (But like ADB I think Bowman is excited by his potential and may want to see more of him in training camp or beginning of the regular season.)
AA - Colorado would not keep AA. They could maybe flip him to another team. But if you include AA then your center depth is Toews, Duchene, Schmaltz, Kero, Dauphin. (You could play Duchene, Schmaltz, Kero, Dauphin on a wing too.)
Jokiharju - Probably ok in the package.
2019 1st round pick - maybe ok in the package.

Another factor would be the signability of Duchene after he contract expires. They could talk to Duchene (with permission) before the trade and have a wink wink agreement with Duchene to an extension before the trade is made. It would not be unheard of.
