Well why the bloody hell did you guys build it so far away for??

So, not so close but just close enough for the hate to exist!

Everyone loves to hate the Leafs, but they're one of the only teams in sports it seems that didn't beg for taxpayer money to build their barn.

It's a common practice in cities around the globe for taxpayers to foot the bill, but it doesn't change that it's a horrible disservice to taxpayers.

- leafsfann

maybe you need to get out more often...

canucks built their own barn, sens built their own barn, habs built their own barn... you aren't special... toronto people should get over themselves.

Rogers (formerly GM) Place was built by Frank Griffiths, Cost was $160M in 1996.
Scotia Bank Centre (Ottawa) was privately funded, Cost as $170M in 1996.
Bell Centre (formerly Molson Centre) was privately funded. Cost was $270M in 1996.
Air Canada Centre (ACC) in Toronto was privately financed Cost was $265M in 1999.

In the US, Madison Square Gardens (Ranger), Wells Fargo Center (Flyers), TD Gardens (Bruins), The United Center (Hawks), the Staples Center (Kings), Pepsi Center (Avalanche) - and maybe a few others are privately owned/funded

Just build the biggest and best arena and make Edmonton pay for it.
- Tumbleweed

Haha, we overpaid right?! We are such donks right?!

Funniest part of your joke is it's actually kinda true....throughout ALL of Canada. You female dogs keeps taking our money in transfer taxes and then claim how much better you are, it's a franking joke. Smarten up or no more allowance.

The amount they wanted Calgary taxpayers to provide was unreasonable. 1.2 billion. We could build a ton of schools, hospitals, roads, minor hockey rinks, with that money. We have a great arena already. It's shaped like a saddle.

It sucks that the Flames ownership group is being so manipulative.

I'm sick of these millionaires and in some cases billionaires holding tax payers for ransom. Build your own damn arena.

I just cited them as an example because I knew they did and didn't want to talk out of my ass. I didn't want to research all the teams that had while I was laying in bed. Props to EK for finally having a mobile version btw.

What I was getting at is it's the exception for teams to build their own. In baseball for example, the Giants just built their own recently but the last one prior with no public funds was dodger stadium in the 50s.

Agreed. The Flames should stay in Calgary. JUst put an expansion team in Seattle and voila, you have 2 16 team conferences. You can then move the Alberta teams to the Central division and Colorado to the Pacific to balance the divisions.

Problem solved.

There's an older one there, which in all honesty would probably be fine. Just like the saddledome. Yes, it's not shiny and new anymore but it's far from being a dump. How old were the gardens in Toronto and Boston, and the Forum in Montreal before the teams left them? Those were old and lacked luxury boxes and the like. The Saddledome.is ~30. If it was a person it might just be moving out of home. Lol

I love stumbling across the dumbest post of the day.

And 9 times out of 10 it's a leaf fan. What a bunch of turds.

as a matter of fact they are upgrading Key Arena and it should be ready in three years for a pro team.

no problem... living in toronto just used to t. people always going on about some random t. stat or the other...

in any case. it was your point about being one of the only ones, when there are like 10 NHL teams i listed that have done it... could be more but didn't want to look into all the others...

I was thinking more of stadiums and arenas as a whole. If you throw in all 4 if the major sports in North America, taxpayers are on the hook for the Lions share of it. I doubt that a quarter f these buildings are privately funded. I live in the Phoenix metro and this debate is still pretty fresh.

That's still not true. Some of the biggest sports stadiums in the US (Cowboys and Yankee stadiums) are subsidized by tax payer money but they don't contribute 'the lions share' as you state. It's usually 20% to 30% of the overall project cost.
