Why would they move so far? Are the fans supposed to drive all the way to Seattle to watch a home game?? Crazy...

No Canadian team is moving. Never going to happen.

Well, unless Canada goes through some major economic disaster that doesn't also affect the US

The TV money is just too huge. There aren't too many American teams raking in anything close to what the Canadian teams get in their local TV deals.

A half empty building in Calgary would still generate more overall revenue for the league than a full building in Seattle.

- Charliebox

Exactly. Even Buttman knows you don't move a club with a season ticket base of the Flames (most home games are sold out) when you have DAL ARZ CAR FLA NYI NJ with barely 4000 in the stands for some home games. My buddies have been to FLA games where they think there was only 900 there crammed into the lower bowl. Flames are staying put they will retro-fit the 'Dome if they have to...just posturing right now.

Ever.

I don't understand why this couldn't be worked out like the stadium in Regina was.

Team chipped in 10%
private businesses like the hotels and restaurants associations chipped in money.
City payed the majority, but a big chunk was via a loan from the province, all paid back via a tax/surcharge added onto event tickets.

Exactly.

Many fans that have been filling the pockets of those rich bumholes for years.

Why should you pay EVEN MORE for them to make more money? Why should non-flames fans pay for something to make flames owners make more money?

"action from this government has not been working..."

Any given government= same result. Just a matter of how incompetent one group is from the next!

"It took Edmonton forever to get that new building approved...almost 7 years.."

So, forever sure has become a short term!

What does that have to do with screwing taxpayers?

It's not even about tickets sold. When local TV deals are in excess of $40m/Yr and the Canadian National deal is 5.2B for 12 years, it's clear no one will be leaving Canada.

What kind of money would Seattle get from their local network? A couple Mill a best.

When Canada only had 6 NHL teams it was said that they generated over 40% of overall league revenue. Most of that is TV money.

It's a nice thought but the situation economically in Calgary hasn't gotten any better under the NDP gov't. close to 50% of office space in downtown Calgary was empty in the past few years with around 25,000 leaving the city to find jobs out of province...likely not to return. It's just not the right time to ask businesses and hotels to kick in when they are really struggling.

When you elect a government that has no idea how to govern like the NDP it's just tax tax tax and they effectively killed thousands of businesses in Calgary small and large. Not a good time.

But in a few years when the NDP is ousted and the Alberta economy stabilizes I'm willing to bet this Arena situation in Calgary is going to get solved. No need to panic unless Buttman decides to pull more back door crap.

Anyone else see John Oliver's episode on arena/stadium funding? Fans shouldn't put up with billionaire owners crying about not getting their state of the art arenas built for free. If tax payers are paying for the building, then shouldn't there be some control on ticket prices? I get that these people are running a business, but I really don't think fans should be compelled to resent their governments just because they won't fund a new rink.

lol ya any local media/papers/press can skew attendance figures for the papers dude...but when people are ACTUALLY at the games...different story. Been to games in ARZ where they reported 9000 in the papers but maybe there was 4400 there if that. Average 'reported' attendance vs reality are two very different things. Set your alarm early champ...wakey wakey...

Carolina's attendance numbers dropped significantly over the past three years, partly because they now report the number of actual butts in the seats as opposed to the number of tickets sold/given away.

They only give away about 300 tickets per night now. It's how they managed to turn a profit for the first time ever in a season where they didn't make the playoffs.
