What was his offer?

The city wants the arena in Victoria Park, which is near the current Saddle Dome, and has committed $150 million over ten years to revitalize the area.

They also said they are open to the idea of providing a sort of loan towards the construction of a new arena, which would be paid back by the Flames owners over time, whether through a ticket surcharge or something else, similar to how the football stadium in Regina was constructed.

You live where? oh right...
Nenshi WAS a good mayor. Nenshi forgot as seemingly all politicians do, what got him elected. I have had the pleasure of dealing with him on several issues. He's a smug, self promoting opportunist who has divided council so it has become completely dysfunctional.

Regardless of the arena, and I do support taxpayer money (how/what/how much tbd) but that has nothing to do with my dislike for Nenshi.

And Ek, please. Just dumb.

Great argument here. It is impossible to access information these days.

That's fair. I'll admit I'm a bit out of touch with the political situation over the last few years.

Well if this mayor (apparently alot of people in Calgary are behind him on this) decided to run a campaign on public money for public services then I don't see the issue .

On the other hand this could just be flames ownership selling off the classical corporate welfare bum plea for more money .....

- Alexzanki

This Mayor is not as well liked these days as you may think. He is a pompous, arrogant, bullying lying politician that could give a rats ass about the Flames. Whether this building is an issue or not, this clown needs to go. With an election coming Oct 17th, good on the Flames.

no level of government in Canada should be pitching in for an NHL facility.

No Canadian team is moving. Never going to happen.

Well, unless Canada goes through some major economic disaster that doesn't also affect the US

The TV money is just too huge. There aren't too many American teams raking in anything close to what the Canadian teams get in their local TV deals.

A half empty building in Calgary would still generate more overall revenue for the league than a full building in Seattle.

Yep and throw Naheed in the mix. Boom

This is all timing. Political BS. Let some underlings with the City and the Flames handle discussions and they'd find a solution.

- geta02it

The Stampede committee is the 3rd partner in this dance. They do not want to give up any victoria park land of theirs for the Flames.

Flames want public money for new arena, claiming its part of the Olympic pursuit

city wont commit to any public money prior to a successful bid.

ANd around and around we go

Every team that comes to the government for money should be told to kick stones. it is 100% of the time a scam on the tax payers.
- James_Tanner

I wonder if the $400000.00 the Flames Foundation raised & donated yesterday is a scam too? Too many people just look at tax payor money, billionaire owners & millionaire players. The value of a professional franchise (especially one that doesn't have the NBA or MLB or NFL) is so underestimated until you lose it. If the Flames were to move & suddenly the City realizes the impact & value of a franchise down the road, we would never get one without a stadium. Lets sit down & make a deal while we still have one.

Ever.

I don't understand why this couldn't be worked out like the stadium in Regina was.

Team chipped in 10%
private businesses like the hotels and restaurants associations chipped in money.
City payed the majority, but a big chunk was via a loan from the province, all paid back via a tax/surcharge added onto event tickets.
