Lucas:

Allow me to once again explain the reasoning for obtaining Fehr:

The Leafs needed to expose a certain number of players who had a certain amount of NHL experience for the expansion draft.

They didn't have enough of those guys, so they picked up Fehr. That was the one and only reason.

If they didn't do that, they would have had to expose a guy who was actually good.

- Atomic Wedgie

What is puzzling is why they picked a guy like that with a $2 million a year cap hit. Surely there were cheaper scraps around. And he needs to find a new address soon.

Can you believe Vernon Fiddler played almost 900 games in the NHL and I still had to look him up when he announced his retirement because I had no idea who he was?

They needed a forward who filled the following criteria:

a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

My guess is these guys were hard to trade for last year - so getting a stiff making $2 milly was the best Lou could do.

One of the things that makes the Leafs superior offensively is being able to throw out three very solid scoring lines. Not many teams in the NHL can do that. JVR is a 2nd overall pick with a great shot and loves to go to the net. No player in the minors currently replaces that.
- winsix

I agree I'm not convinced that all 3 will be gone...one will be kept imo.

JVR and Bozak have been here for all the poop times...it'll be tough for them to leave when the times are so good.

I do think Babs plan is to put Willie at center eventually.

Next year

Marleau-Matthews-Marner
JVR-Nylander-Kap
Grundstrom-Kadri-Brown
Martin-Brooks-Hyman.

If that's the case keeping JVR would be possible...especially since Marleau is only here for 2-3 years. All of a sudden that left side is pretty weak without JVR.

What Wedgie is trying to tell you is that Fehr is no Komarov. Komarov, in Wedgies opinion, is the ideal 3rd line player that the Leafs need to lock up for a while.

Interesting to hear Shanahan say he doesn't think signing Marleau is a sign that they're going for it this year. Played more heavily on the mentoring factor than a change in mindset.

I don't think they are "selling their assets" going for it...but I have a hard time believing that Marleau signed here to mentor. He's never won a cup and the Leafs obviously told him they are going for it within the next 2 years. Maybe 3

I don't think he liked the card I posted earlier. Those eyes and the spelling of his name were amusing.

For sure. I think they'll really start to ramp it up next season (2018/19)

I havnt talked to Lou or Bruce much this summer - I am not sure their game plan once the season starts but I think you would be a good candidate if one of them or someone else stepped down
