kapanen is the closest we have in terms of replacing jvr's goal scoring and speed. - Tumbleweed
And he hasnt done much scoring at the NHL level.
I dont think people realize how much JVR brings to the score sheet.
We really have no one that can step in and replace what he does. |

I agree
Kapanen will be a third liner I feel (my 2 c)
Leafs will need one of the young guys in the system to mature before anyone can be expected to put up JVR numbers.
JVR just may be a Maple Leaf in 2018, I just hope they don't pay him too much because we need Nylander, Marner, Matthews inked without a doubt |

"Rychel trending down"...
Really?? based on what actually.
He'll be loved more than Kapanen and Connor Brown after this season. - MaximusAurelius
Rychel had a great second half last season. He's certainly not replacing JVR though. |

to me kap has the most impressive ahl resume - out of the guys we have.
he needs to translate his game to the nhl. if he finds his grove, i think he could be a solid 50 point player. |

Kap has also only played a handful of games in the NHL. He started to produce well in the A once he gained his confidence. I don't think 2nd line is out of the question, but given the current depth third line may be more likely for the next two seasons. |

No doubt about it-we have forward depth out the wazoo.....
But this team is a Rielly/Gardiner/Anderson injury away from missing the playoffs as we are woefully thin on defense and in goal.
Interesting that teams such as Columbus/Carolina/Nashville have built defensive depth and we have gone the other way.
Will be interesting to see how the strategy plays out over time, and whether we end up trading Nylander or Marner to get a number 1 D man. |

Kapanen impressed me last year in the stretch drive and playoffs. He was clearly well coached in the AHL - stepped into the NHL immediately into a PK role, which was not what I was expecting at all, and also demonstrated a knack for scoring. |

Agreed- he was our second leading scorer last season and very good in the playoffs. He is under appreciated in my view. |

I agree that he is not a replacement for JVR completely. Kapanen is an excellent skater though and seems to be lucky. He scored a couple against Washington including that beauty in double ot. He'll be ok as a third liner down the road. |

other than the OT winner, his offense has been pretty much non-existent in the nhl
though i do like other parts of his game.
i think the leafs are letting guys develop at their own pace. he's not on the level of the big 3 and may take longer to adjust to the nhl. |

Agree on the skating part. Went to a couple of Marlies games last year and he looked way faster than anybody else on the ice. If he makes the Leafs he makes a fast team even faster. |
