Darth must be getting Scott Powers' tweets. Powers mentioned in one "based on Hawks Team A roster, there is a possibility for Cat/Schmaltz/Kane line in the first scrimmage later this morning".

It makes sense. Especially because there is very little saying that AA should be playing with Kane now that Panarin is gone. AA is probably better suited on the 3rd line.

I really want Hayden to do well - he seems like a natural leader for some of the younger guys and he's young enough / smart enough to have no met his ceiling yet. His skating is still somewhat of a concern, but he made up for that some last year with playing smart.

Hopefully just for fun. Scrawny Schmaltzy is the biggest guy on that line?

My only neg on Hayden with Kane is can he score? I'd like to see Kane avoid double teams and/or cheating defenses.

I don't think Hayden needs to be on the 2nd line to make the team, I was envisioning more of a bottom 6 role if he makes the team.

I'd rather Schmaltz got his feet wet at NHL center at 3C, not 2C this year. Everyone knocks AA on here in favor of an unproven pipsqueak, mindboggling.

Agreed. Also makes the Bouma signing/overpay all the more questionable when you had Hayden in hand.

I just think the opposite because playing with Kane he doesn't have to focus on D so much and he can get the sheltered minutes starting in the offensive zone. AA is supposed to be a shutdown guy, so maybe he should be getting those more defensive minutes. The Hawks don't want Kane's line doing so many dzone starts.

Everyone keeps asking why Tootoo and Rozy are considered for roster spots. I've said before that I believe they serve a number of small purposes:
1. Veteran effectiveness, Q trusts his veterans.
2. Salary. On a 23 man roster, a couple are sitting in the press box. For a team up against the cap, would you rather have a $900k salary sitting in the press box, or a $600k salary? Over the full year, their presence on the 23 man roster probably saves $500k of cap space.
3. Fit of their role. Every day a prospect sits in the press box is a lost day of game experience in Rockford. Rozy and Tootoo are not having their long term growth stunted by sitting in the press box. Hawks can use a Rockford shuttle to get their top prospects experience in the NHL, while playing games somewhere and avoiding stints in the press box.

I think Rozy and Tootoo on the 23 man roster is a smart move for three small reasons.

that looked more like slow def and bad goal tending. he did elevate the puck from in close which is good.

Bouma can be buried 100% in Rockford if needed.

how about going with a 22 man roster and save the whole $700K by only having 2 guys press boxed and not 3. I think Roz may be done he has not recovered from concussions, so I'm sure he has not trained and he is 39 and was so slow last year.

keep him on LTIR to talk to Kempny and Rutta (size and speed) I just don't think you need both bouma and tootoo on a roster if you plan on going deep in the playoffs. No one is going to claim tootoo so send him down and play one of the young guys that impresses. if a month in its not working you can switch. We know what tootoo brings we need to find some bottom pairing guys that bring more. only way to do that is play them.

It wasn't bad goal tending - square to the shooter, Hayden probably couldn't see much of net from there and got it to just get in off the post. The defense was bad, but mostly because they were tired as they'd been on the ice for a while as Saad-Toews-Panik controlled the play.

No one is favoring Schmaltz over AA, they're trying to propose balanced lines. With the bottom 6 being somewhat suspect / unknown, especially at center, I can see the appeal of having AA on a lower line to help lock it down. Schmaltz would get high offensive zone starts with Kane, though competition would be higher so it's a trade off. I personally would prefer Schmaltz start at 3C as well and get an offensive sheltered role, but I can understand why people would like him with Kane and AA down a line.

None of the lines matter too too much atm, they tried to split the known guys out among the teams so none were stacked and the prospects could get playing time with vets. Pairings are more likely close to what Q is thinking of to at least start the season, minus the switches for 6/7.

The line that stands the best chance to remain intact for a long time is Saad/Toews/Panik, but even that's not guaranteed.

Not a bad line at all. Wouldn't mind that as the 3rd line but that would assume Kane has competent linemates.

I'm thinking Panik might be the first to move down the lineup if he doesn't click/produce consistently, but time will tell.

Yep. Two years ago, Kane didn't skate with Panarin until the first pre-season, so they're going to try a bunch of combos. The fact that Kane has been working with a bunch of the young guys like Schmaltz and Hartman may mean they have a leg up to being with him, though.

From tweets, it sounds like they were pretty dominant on their shifts. And Kane said they're going to be a special line, seemed to have chemistry right away, and described them as a force during the scrimmages.

Patrick Kane has been skating a lot with possible linemate Nick Schmaltz this summer. Also with Hartman, Sharp and Baun.

That's to be expected for players to skate with many teammates to see who possible linemates will be during the regular season. Baun jumps out, though, as a possibility. I'm rooting for Baun as this is likely his last shot at making it with the Hawks or else sign with a new team next year. Baun could be a good energy winger in the bottom-6. Don't see him as a top-6 player.

I believe Kane is talking about how they trained / skated together in the off-season, not necessarily in the scrimmages or anything team related. He did the same with Hinostroza.
