This is a common misconception, by the second half of his second year hedman had started putting up top pair level defensive numbers and his offensive numbers had started coming a long. He may not have "broken out" till year five but his numbers were good.

Id like to see risto under housley as well, im just thinking it might be easier for the team in the long run.

- Sabresfan-365

not sure about that. Hedman's best season point wise in his first 4 seasons was a 26 point campaign. Hedman was soft when he started. He was also playing with great offensive players (St. Louis, Stamkos, Lecavalier) while playing an easy to play/learn defensive trap system that Guy Boucher uses. Hedman's development has been much smoother.

Don't remember 100% but wasn't Hedman rarely used on the PP for a few years as well?

i agree its been much smoother, im saying its probably not fair to either player to compare them.

most of hedmans regular and advanced stats were in the top 4 range by the end of year two. Risto's are all over the place.

dont know for sure but only 3 of his 26 pts were from the PP in year 2 so its either that or they ran just the worst powerplay ever

maybe, hes kinda small though no?

But he's literally a giant, talking cricket in a tux. That alone would be enough to rattle the other team.

Because Matthew Coller can never himself be wrong.

So when he boasted about Risto's advanced stats the year that he and Zadorov were on our 2nd pair, and how he would be an elite #1, partly because of them, he now needs to backpeddle because Risto's numbers are awful.

Coller is a fraud

- sbroads24

Or, it just goes to show that you can use stats to make any point you want, no matter the numbers.

That's pretty damning for stats, for now.

Since Stamkos came to the Lightning the whole pp goes cross ice passes for the one-timer. but from what I remember Hedman still wasn't used a great deal on the pp.

Tampa also had 103 points in Hedman's second season, so...

That's not a giant cricket?

Crickets are like an inch and a half long normally, that mother (frank)er weighs like a pound. And he talks! If you saw that for the first time you'd think someone slipped you a mickey, or you hit your head awfully hard in the toilet last night.

I can't count the number of times I woke up wondering what the hell happened the night before - but never once have I asked myself if this was a possibility.

Agreed probably not the best comparison, But defensemen do take a while to develop especially when you have had 3 or 4 head coaches in that time and has been pretty much thrown to the wolves. Hedman always credits Ohlund (a fellow Swede) with his development, Risto never really had anyone like that that I can remember.

agreed, these sort of factors can explain having some of the worst numbers among d-men but you cant really use it to make the assumption that if the situation was good he'd be a norris candidate.

I would say Hedman is the better talent. Risto's ceiling seems to be a solid first pairing dman

In a year or two, Eichel O'Reilly, Mittelstadt, Pu and asplund will be competing for four center spots which will make Reinhart expendable in exchange for a d man. Idk who you could get but Risto, McCabe, Guhle and a new guy will make a solid top 4. We're gonna be center heavy with a defense by committee approach like Pittsburgh
